Decent introduction with flawsBy EJSThis is an excellent good introduction with some flaws.First; the strengths:- One of the better explanations of the process of designing a show that Ive seen. Very concise overview. Not as detailed as some other treatments but still a good overview.- Good overview of the equipment available at the time of publication (important qualification)- Paperwork discussions good; if a bit out of dateMy big gripe is that this book was published in the early 90s (the 2002 date is a reissue date) and obviously hasnt been updated. For example; it assumes that shows are still saved on floppies; some boards are still analog (cant for the life of me imagine what could possess you to do that) and; from what I can gather; not all digital boards at the time he was writing were even DMX compliant. As a result; theres no discussion of modern intelligent fixtures; moving lights; LEDs; Ethernet-based devices; or other recent innovations. It also assumes that computer-based drafting systems are about the cost of a car (and less portable); so it doesnt talk much about them. (I had to learn hand-drafting in college; the only reason I can imagine learning it now is if you ever have to work for a theater company that still insists on it for some bizarre reason; but I honestly cant think of a good reason to hand-draft anymore). Also; it lacks color illustrations; which I think are an oversight for a lighting design book.In spite of the weaknesses; I would definitely recommend this. Its an excellent overview of the process and basic equipment (which is still in use); as long as you keep in mind youll have to supplement it with information on new equipment.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great bookBy Danny HobsonThis is a must have for learning about the basics of stage lighting. I know of a professor who uses this book to teach his classes about stage lighting. Havent made it through the whole book yet; but it has been a valuable resource with lots of information and drawings.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
