In that pile of books; there are perhaps only 4 or 5 that really stand out. Personally I think a lot of people understand this stuff intellectually; but its much more rare when someone understands it viscerally as well. What I mean by that is an understanding connected to actually playing or trying to create music; as opposed to just regurgitating the same old scale patterns and rules; and calling it music theory. I hate to admit it; but as a young man I learned the hard way that its the easiest thing in the world to get so involved in "mastering" music theory that you completely lose sight of the reason youre learning it in the first place--to make music; dummy. I just thank my lucky stars that I had that epiphany when I did; some never do.Ive never even heard the man play; but simply by using this book I can tell you that Joe Charupakorn is a phenomenal player that not only completely understands this stuff; but also understands the questions that more advanced players have but never seem to get answered with other material. His explanation of arpeggios and their relationship to scales and chords is probably among the shortest Ive ever seen; yet somehow its also probably the best as well. This book is cleanly written; well-organized; and contains tons of arpeggios; with each shown in tons of positions and also across the entire neck. If you somehow require an arpeggio thats not in the book; youll know how to figure it out yourself after you get the hang of the material that is there. Additionally; all of the arpeggios are offered in various forms: formulas; diagrams; scale derivations; and standard tablature... thats just off the top of my head. No matter what your approach; one of these forms will hit home and make sense to you.I honestly cant imagine how this book could be improved. Its actually kind of shocking--there have been many times where Ive said to myself "If I ever have the time to put it all together; Id like to compile a book of arpeggios that has x;y and z..." You can imagine my surprise when that book actually showed up on my doorstep! As funny as it may sound; I would be willing to bet that to the author this book was a serious labor of love; anything less than 5 stars would be a crime! Its a bit much I think for people just starting to learn theory; but if youre an intermediate player or greater and serious about getting a handle on arpeggios; just buy it. Seriously. And Joe; if you ever read your reviews; THANK YOU FOR THIS!!!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great; simple reference!By A HAyesAnytime I wish to do a quick review of standard arpeggios; this is the one I go to. In particular the second half of the book where the formulas are spelled out.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Also a reminder that I was becoming lazy in my daily practice this is getting me back on track.
