For Beginners and the ExperiencedBy Tim KennedyThe range of categories covered in the book are particularly good ndash; sometimes the topics land on very simple formal ideas but they also cover critical theory and a wide range of art forms. I picture the book being a great resource for a new student that is perhaps observing or undergoing a critique for the first time and being barraged with a series of new terms. The text would allow him or her to get their footing on a topic that can seem overwhelming. It is also a good resource for for people who have more experience such as collectors; practicing artists and people that teach. Bravo John!7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. A Must-Have Reference Book for Enjoying ArtBy Carol Cassel BakerWhen Universal Principles of Art arrived; I opened it just for a quick glance. I looked up 45 minutes later when my phone rang. The book is easy to navigate; hard to put down and thoroughly engaging. It has the lure of sensitive; smart; clear writing and an abundance of full-color; gorgeous reproductions. The information in the book is organized; readable and straightforward. There are two pages dedicated to each of 100 ldquo;universal principles of artrdquo;. The left hand page is an informative; yet concise written explanation of a specific idea. The right hand page displays well chosen; high quality visual images exemplifying that topic. The key concepts are actually presented in alphabetical order. There is no need to read one topic before any other; so it is easy to browse the book. Topics range from art making techniques; to movements in art history; to universal concepts connecting artistic endeavors throughout human existence. As the title indicates; there is a lot of information in this book; but it is presented to us in a palatable manner.I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in: studying ART; teaching ART; making ART; understanding ART; discussing ART; viewing ART; but mostly for enjoying ART. I plan to buy copies for friends who claim; ldquo;I donrsquo;t know much about art; but I know what I like.rdquo; This books provides clues about why we like what we like.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Beautiful Show-and-Tell Art TeacherBy William L. Meck; IIThis glossy hardback combines color photographs of acclaimed paintings and sculpture with concise explanations so the reader is ldquo;toldrdquo; and ldquo;shownrdquo; 100 artistic principles; both those you would anticipate like Shape and Texture and those you might not anticipate like Distortion and Op Art. Itrsquo;s a delightful reading (and viewing!) experience that will enrich your painting; drawing; sculpting; photography; architecture; and decorating.
