I was reading a book by Marianne Williamson and she mentioned Ellens decision not to be with a man for 25 years until she dispelled all of her own shadows and I felt compelled to read her memoir. I am so glad that I have as it is so rich and we have a few things in common. Surviving the suicide of someone close for one. The impact of such a choice remains for a good long time. I hope that she has forgiven herself for taking on that responsibility of another. I learned after years of self inquiry that no one can alter anothers path if they are unwilling to accept that help. And of course kowtowing to men...whole nother story. :) But I think the most striking aspects; for me; are the incidences where Ellen shows her courage; her tenacity; her desire to learn and be open to all that the Universe holds. Last but not least- her love for her son Jeff prevails throughout. I hope that she is well. Ellen really lets you get to know her quite readily. Thank you. I learned a lot. ps Forgot- I love that Ellen shares all of her mystical studies with us. Doing the Zikr chant from time to time. :)1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Painful; Shattering; Difficult ... RedemptiveBy JordanJasperBurstyns memoir is a Hollywood tour de force; no doubt about it. She is a true spiritual Seeker and a special soul -- that much is exceedingly apparent. But theres no wonder she fought to find something spiritual to cling to. Her life; from the beginning; was fraught with traumatic experience; abuse; and insanity on the part of so many in her familial and social circles. I always thought Burstyn brought a charisma that only three or four actresses could transmit onscreen. Reading her bio; I can see how this immense talent was formed; at least partially. Its jaw-dropping stuff to read. The (sad and) scary psychotic husbands story alone will make you sweat in cant-stop-reading-this-trainwreck horror. There is an awful lot of drama that one senses Burstyn brought upon herself as she fought to make it in a rather soulless business. She is self-deprecating and tends to recognize her mistakes ... One wonders why she was in such denial; but we are also talking about an era wherein women could not just "walk away" from abusive situations. Burstyn brings that home poignantly. You also read a great deal about her craftsmanship; and that is an ever-fascinating glimpse. After all; she made it BIG after age 40 in Hollywood. Amazing. The cost of it was more than her share of self-absorption; but by the end of this harrowing bio; youre cheering for Burstyns ability to find peace;and she does. In the meantime; you get a stunning; moving inside-look at the making of films like The Exorcist and Alice Doesnt Live Here; Anymore; as well as Broadway thrills ... What a life. Required Reading for ...By George Allen PapapetrouIf you are interested in true heroes and are looking for feminine models; templates; for becoming Real and staying Human. This is a book for you.In this masterful effort Ellen shows us the lessons she has; and is; learning. These lessons apply to everyone; especially women; in an age where masculine energy still dominates the globe.Ellen provided me with renewed awareness of the powerful insights of Jungian psychotherapy and mystical Islam via Sufism. Bringing these to the real world Ellen gifts us her experiences with Lee Strasberg who dedicated his life to authenticity in acting through his teachings carried on through The Actors Studio.Starting in Detroit and traveling the globe Ellen shows us herself as a pioneer rediscovering ancient truths and guided by the force of the One Truth common to all of us and everything. Yet manifest through all the different stories of peoples lives.I share her love of the unknown and her evolving awareness of the beauty of being. I enjoyed watching her adventure in accepting her power as a human being and using that power with Love in her chosen profession. There are a number of books which will become home for those seeking to enrich their lives in authenticity. Sue Monk Kidd provides a powerful example with her story in The Dance of the Dissident Daughter. Ellen provides another with her story in Lessons in Becoming Myself.Thank you Ellen from the depth of my being.
