Description

MillerA part of me is deeply pleased with Ukulele: The Most Requested Songs: Strum and Sing Series; another part of me is deeply annoyed. The page layout is inefficient and hard to use with longer songs stretching out unnecessarily over four or five pages. Each page has huge amounts of white space; which is useful if you plan to write a lot of notes; work out transpositions; and so on; but which makes for a lot wasted pages if you dont. The good part is every chord for every song is right there on the page; making it ridiculously easy to strum through any song in the book; even if youve never heard it before. I found about a dozen songs that I plan to use this book to practice on and work with; so the book is indeed useful. I just hate having to flip pages even for the simplest songs. The other downside is there are no staff lines; no notes; no tab; no real musical reference at all other than the chords. If you already know the song; this is fine. If you dont; you might want to look it up online and listen to it a few times before you start strumming otherwise youll wind up with something so entirely different no one will recognize it; including you!7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. There has to be a better songbook than this...right?By J DouthitHonestly; Im a bit disappointed by this book. Im a new Uke player ( new to string instruments; period); so I was looking forward to the "Strum Sing" formatting while I am still learning chords how to transition between chords. Unfortunately; this book has zero instructional-type material at the beginning of the book about how to read the songs in this book. In addition; it does not display tempo/time signature information; nor does it give the actual strum patterns for the songs. It is literally the lyrics for a song (which are sometimes wrong) listed out; with the chords listed above the lyrics (with the chord changes sometimes placed at the wrong places in the song). The one bonus is that the book lists diagrams for the chords that are used in each song... Really; this songbook is really only useful for the small handful of songs in the book that I already have the time/tempo/beat/melody memorized for...Sigh; the search continues for a better Beginner Uke Songbook...2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Its just OK. And "Most requested" must be a loose definition.By Customer2.5 stars. Not recommended for beginners. The song book is OK for the price (about 8.50 around the time I purchased it). I agree with some of the other commenters - some cons include: too much white space on the pages and there is no musical guidance for the melodies (you have to know the song). Honestly; I would normally overlook these aspects... if you dont know the song you could look it up; listen to it and then learn the melody pretty quickly. My biggest pet peeve is the song selection. The title "Most requested" for ukulele music conjures up famous Hawaiian songs or ones from the movies (like Somewhere over the Rainbow or Tonight you Belong to Me; the latter from the movie the Jerk) or some acoustic guitar songs that are commonly covered on ukulele. Instead; the book has a few nice and familiar oldies (like Cecilia or Leaving on a Jet Plane) mixed in with MOSTLY unexpected or weird additions; including modern pop like the Black Eyed Peas and classic rock... these just dont fit with a ukulele sound. You can play them; have fun and even sing it ironically; but I doubt the average person would request those. So I dont know how they selected these "most requested" ukulele songs. Yes; there are some good songs in there too; but like I said; it is overall a weird and odd selection. I recommend you review the song list before purchasing to make sure you want to learn at least a few songs; so the purchase is worth it.My second criticism is also related to the song selection; there are only a few truly beginner-friendly songs; as in ones that can be played with only 3 to 5 chords. I was hoping for more. This song book is decent for those looking to expand their repertoire and learn some new songs.
