Disciplining Bodies in the Gymnasium: Memory; Monument; Modernity (Sport in the Global Society)

ePub Disciplining Bodies in the Gymnasium: Memory; Monument; Modernity (Sport in the Global Society) by Sherry Mckay; Patricia Vertinsky in Arts-Photography

Description

Architecture and design have been used to exert control over bodies; across lines of class; gender and race. They regulate access to certain spaces and facilities; impose physical or psychological barriers; and make particular activities possible for specific groups.Built in 1951; the War Memorial Gymnasium at the University of British Columbia is a prize-winning example of modernist architecture. Although conceived to honour the dead of World War II; it was far from being a neutral memorial and gymnasium for everyday athletes. This collection shows what the design; construction and shifting functions and spatial configurations of the building reveal about the values and aspirations of the university in the post-war years. It shows how the building reflected the social and power relations among university administrators; architects and planners; faculty; staff and students; and demonstrates how the culture and structure of the gymnasium responded to changing attitudes to competition; discipline; profession; gender; race and health. As the editors explain; built form has politics; and culture - sporting culture - is just politics by another name.

ThornburghJohn; I think the book is terrific.I just want to clear up a mistake you made. In the terrible revival of "Georgy" at the Wings Theatre; which I directed and take all of the blame for; you mention song changes that werent correct. "Howdjado" was indeed cut. However; "Something Special" was never cut; and was the one highlight of the show. I have no idea where you got "Lifes a Holiday" being replaced by "Toy Balloon." "Toy Balloon" was always in the show; and was my becirc;te noir; because its the stupidest lyric Carol Bayer Sager ever wrote. I fought daily to remove that song from the show; to no avail.Im flattered that you included our terrible little revival in your book; and also incredibly ashamed that it ever occurred. John Simon reviewed the show in New York Magazine; in which he said "The chief culprit is Morgan LaVere. His direction was utterly inept."I couldnt agree more with Mr. Simon; with one exception. He stated that the show was set in "Present Day;" which made the whole abortion thing a non-event. The production was set in 1967; complete with go-go boots; psychedelic set pieces and day-glo paint. I assume he closed his eyes for the entire production; and I cant blame him. That said; if you to a second edition of your terrific book; either obliterate the entry; or change the entry to reflect the correct song changes.Morgan LaVere4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A MUSICAL THEATRE FANS MUST HAVE BOOKBy Robert F. PowersThis massive volume showcases just about every production to hit the Broadway stage in the last sixty years-each production has a brief synopsis of plot-tryout problems-backstage squabbles-cast listings-musical numbers used in each production and even songs deleted before the shows opening-the length of the run and profit or loss-and every show that has had mutiple revivals-the info on the revival or revivals follows the original production section. This is not a book that can be read in a short period of time but is so well presented the reader can always pick it up turn to any page and find some wonderful tidbit. the only drawbacks is the bulky gargantuan size of the book; the gargantuan price;no photos and the teeny-weeny print. but then if the print was larger you would probably need a fork-lift to carry the book-forget the size-forget the price- forgive the lack of photos-this book is a must.
