Discourses in Place: Language in the Material World

ePub Discourses in Place: Language in the Material World by Ron Scollon; Suzie Wong Scollon in Arts-Photography

Description

Discourses in Place is essential reading for anyone with an interest in language and the way we communicate. Written by leaders in the field; this text argues that we can only interpret the meaning of public texts like road signs; notices and brand logos by considering the social and physical world that surrounds them. Drawing on a wide range of real examples; from signs in the Chinese mountains; to urban centres in Austria; Italy; North America and Hong Kong; this textbook equips students with the methodology and models they need to undertake their own research in geosemiotics; the key interface between semiotics and the physical world.Discourses in Place is highly illustrated; containing real examples of language in the material world; including a how to use this book section; group and individual activities; and a glossary of key terms.

Its filled with so many facts that it was a very interesting read. It kind of made me sad when I finished it though; because after all that reading I didnt really feel like I got to know the actual women very well. The book takes you through their lives in show business and then their struggles living outside of the business but I didnt come away with a real take on these women and who they were as individuals. This book left me wanting to know so much more about the Hilton sisters and their personal struggles and feelings.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. An interesting; admirably non-salacious look at a fascinating pairBy Ga303Two things come to mind here: One; that in 2016 we cant truly comprehend what a Big Deal the Hilton sisters were in their day; nor do we have much understanding now of the vaudeville craze that birthed their fame. And Two; that the author is to be commended for remaining a student of biography and not stooping to some of the sleazy directions this book could have taken.I found this a fascinating; absorbing and ultimately tragic assessment of two women who were exploited practically from birth; as well as an insightful and colorful dive into the times in which they lived.I thoroughly enjoyed the book; but as some readers have already suggested; felt that I never knew Daisy or Violet as individuals. The author goes to great pains to make sure the reader knows they were two very different women -- which indeed; obviously; they were -- without really telling us who either of them was outside being individual halves of "the girls;" "the sisters;" or "the twins." This perhaps is a disservice.Im a huge history buff; and a great lover of biographies; and over the course of that predilection have read scores of human stories; including a couple of books on Eng and Chang Bunker. In some of the Bunker biographies; I felt that I came away with more insights into what it really might be like to go through life literally attached to another human being; especially in an era in which separation was not possible. (And even today is often not possible; depending on the physiology of the connection.) I didnt feel the same emphasis on the individuals here; and found myself wanting to know much more about these women beyond who chose to be blonde and who chose to be brunette.Other than that somewhat empty frustration; I found this a very enjoyable read.An excellent companion to this book is the documentary "Bound by Flesh;" another insightful and well-researched biography of Daisy and Violet.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Happiness Despair for Conjoined TwinsBy Dianne Kemerly McMahanI gave this an excellent rating; as the memoir by Dean Jensen was a book;that totally captured my attention. The memoir is about twin sisters Violet Daisy that are joined at the hip.(no pun intended) were born in 1908;where the occurrence of such a birth was considered the devils work.Their natural mother;denied them;but they persevered to become the talented darlings of their era. They traveled from place to place entertained for more than five decades.Try this book for yourself;it wont let you down will keep you enthralled to the end.
