Dolores del Riacute;o: Beauty in Light and Shade

ePub Dolores del Riacute;o: Beauty in Light and Shade by Linda B. Hall in Arts-Photography

Description

Dolores del Riacute;os enormously successful career in Hollywood; in Mexico; and internationally illuminates issues of race; ethnicity; and gender through the lenses of beauty and celebrity. She and her husband left Mexico in 1925; as both their well-to-do families suffered from the economic downturn that followed the Mexican Revolution. Far from being stigmatized as a woman of color; she was acknowledged as the epitome of beauty in the Hollywood of the 1920s and early 1930s. While she insisted upon her ethnicity; she was nevertheless coded white by the film industry and its fans; and she appeared for more than a decade as a romantic lead opposite white actors. Returning to Mexico in the early 1940s; she brought enthusiasm and prestige to the Golden Age of Mexican cinema; becoming one of the great divas of Mexican film. With struggle and perseverance; she overcame the influence of men in both countries who hoped to dominate her; ultimately controlling her own life professionally and personally.

Fletcher is very detailed in his coverage of the band; but is critical when its warranted. He also provides a lot of detail surrounding the business-side of music(record contracts; interactions with IRS and Warner Bros.; etc.) which I found really interesting; though others might not. In general; Fletcher doesnt just gush as some biographers might. This may be the only book that covers the bands ENTIRE career; from inception to retirement. I was glad that he decided to update it once more to cover the bands last few years. He also shares some great insights into the last album. The only thing he really leaves out is a detailed discussion of the band members side projects (such as Bill Berrys solo 45 in 1989). But I guess theres only so much room.Bottom line: An absolute must-read for R.E.M. fans. Ive read a few of the bands bios; and if you read only one; make it this one.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Excellent R.E.M StoryBy KariThis book met and exceeded my expectations. The story of R.E.M expertly told and nicely written. Covers major milestones and discusses all sessions and resulting records. Focus is firmly on the band and its highs and lows and final graceful withdrawal. If you are a "music" fan wanting to know about these aspects of the band; this book is for you. If you are an "obsessed" fan and want to read about the private lives of the bands members; this book will not give you much.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Very enjoyable bookBy M. BermanLots of interesting stories and information. Occasionally bogs down in details about specific concerts and recording sessions. Its clear that the writer is very much a fan of R.E.M.; both as a band and as people. Whether this is a good thing in terms of biography is up to the reader to decide. I would have liked a bit more perspective about R.E.M.s legacy given the fact that popular music took a very different turn after their heyday in the late 80s/early 90s.
