Shakespearen Dances to Trip the Unwary ReaderBy DanceHistorianWhile there is definitely a need for a practical guide to the dances of Shakespeares plays and time period; this slim volume fails to satisfy. Although it was published in 2005; Jim Hoskins draws his examples from early twentieth-century dance historians like Mabel Dolmetsch and Lincoln Kirstein. He ignores or misinterprets most of the recent research on 16th- and 17th-century dance and court masques by Julia Sutton; Barbara Sparti; John Forrest; Ian Payne; Skiles Howard; Anne Daye; Barbara Ravelhofer; Stephen Orgel; etc.; and completely fails to mention the main work on his topic; Alan Brissendens Shakespeare and the Dance.This leads to numerous problems. Dances such as the coranto are attributed to the wrong time period; while choreographies for others such as the jig are completely made up. While it is defensible to create a choreography when there is no historical source describing a dance; Hoskins does not distinguish between dances reconstructed from original sources and ones made up by the author in the style of the time. Finally; the illustrations throughout the book are charming and entertaining; but they convey a completely inaccurate and ahistorical style; and also misrepresent many of the steps.In short; this book is so filled with historical inaccuracies that it can only mislead readers. Those interested in the dances of Shakespeare would be better off reading Brissendens Shakespeare and the Dance and Thoinot Arbeaus Orchesography; and watching Julia Suttons excellent Il Ballarino: The Art of Renaissance Dance or the attractive; if less accurate; How To Dance Through Time Vol. III: The Majesty of Renaissance Dance.1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Dances for EveryoneBy Salli ParkerWhat a joy to find; finally; an explanation of dance thats truly accessible! Anyone directing or choreographing a production of Shakespeare will find this an invaluable aid in staging dances and movement. One of the most interesting aspects of this book is the authors use of descriptions and diagrams that are clear and easy to follow. This book would be especially valuable for director/choreographers in the educational world; as it provides an easy avenue between drama and dance areas. The detail and obviously widely researched information is not too simple for any professional production. The author has made his topic entertaining and informative. Also enjoyable is the extraordinary story of Mr. Hoskins amazing background. Highly recommended.
