Description

A model city; the hope of democracy ndash; John Nolen on his suggested plans for Madison; WisconsinThis book connects John Nolens political and social visions with his design proposals by analyzing his extensive writings; personal correspondence and some of his most significant works. While John Nolen is best known as a city planner; he trained as a landscape architect and used the titles landscape architect and city planner interchangeably throughout his career. A prolific practitioner; he was engaged in nearly 400 projects throughout the United States between 1905 and 1936; including town planning; industrial housing; state and city parks; new towns and regional planning.Focusing particularly on several projects central to Nolenrsquo;s career including Madison (WI); Mariemont (OH); Venice (FL) and Penderlea (NC); Beck investigates the ideologies that underpinned Nolenrsquo;s work. This is a rare look at a key figure in the development of 20th century American cities.?

Dont let sales rankings or the price tag scare you off; this is an old school page-turner with just a hint of academese. Enough to give it some spice but not so much that your eyes are glazing over and you steer your car into oncoming traffic. No less a book savant than Ron Kittle gives copies to his fans and friends. If you are here for the other Aaron Tuckers books; then you dont really understand either author.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This Book Needs to Be ReadBy Howard LoftonI have been a judge for 60 years. In all that time; Aaron Tuckers book emerges as a colossus of scholarship. Its not about basketball; thats true. But youll be alright. Dont be frightened about it. Put it on your nightstand or stack it sideways with some other books in your closet. But dont keep it there too long. A book like this needs to be read.Thank you.
