Until recently; it has only been available as a used hardback and was very expensive. Fortunately; the Carey estate has seen fit to publish it as an affordable paperback.Harry Carey Jr. was as good a storyteller as he was a character actor. In this memoir; he recounts his days as a member of director John Fords "stock company" of actors with a highly readable conversational style. The book is full of humor; but does not draw back from presenting a "warts and all" view of the subject matter. Anecdotes regarding such classic films as The Searchers and She Wore A Yellow Ribbon abound; as well as stories of lesser known films such as Wagonmaster.I look forward to reading it again.8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Real People; not real HollywoodBy Eugene M YayoshiThis was written by not a major star or biographer but a fellow actor who personally knew the people that were in the "John Ford Stock Company". You get the human feelings and relationships among the varied personalities; their high points and low. These people act for us on the "silver screen" but in real life are just human beings just like us. Harry Cary Jr.s book shows us how human; warts and all; our "heroes" are. This book would interest anyone who wants an insight into movie making toward the end of the studio systems glory days by one of Hollywoods premier directors of the last Century.7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. If you want the "behind the scenes" look; this is the book for you.By sophies girlI thoroughly enjoyed this book and the info on all the characters included. Great stories that I laughed out loud about. All the antics of Ford; the Duke; Bond etc were like being there. Sometimes a little sad and many times I laughed so hard I cried. The only down side is the lauguage. Yes; I know they talked like that; but it was still hard on my eyes (and ears) The pictures were an added bonus. And the first thing I did was watch the films again; and yes I have them all! I highly reccommend this book.
