This book is hard to read; not for the content; but how it is structured. how the pages are put together show that there is little thought into how it is printed; very very few paragraphs; just huge blocks of cramped text in small font. It can be pretty disorienting; there may be a better put together copy out there; find it and buy it if you can.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great abridged version of a classic storyBy Shela W.A really great abridged version of the classic story.I bought this book for an Italian class that I was in. The whole book is in Italian. The text has been "translated" into modern Italian with simpler language; which makes this a great option for students who are still getting started with the language but want to read a classic. There are also definitions (in Italian; of course!) for uncommon words that appear in the text. Based on what Ive seen on this books Wikipedia page; some parts of the plot have been edited out; but the main points are still there. The illustrations are lovely; and each chapter/section is followed by a set of exercises to help with comprehension. Interspersed among the "story" chapters are brief; 1- to 2-page readings that give you some background on the characters; setting; and traditions at the time.To give you a sense of the difficulty-level; this book was used for a second-semester college course on Italian.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Having read I Promessi Sposi by Alessandro Manzoni; I can say that it is truly a work of art. Written in modern Italian of which Manzoni was a promoter; the novel depicts extensively and in amazing detail the comings and goings of its characters. Other than procuring the diffusion of the new national tongue; it contains vivid images of the middle ages in Europe. I recommend it!
