Drawing the Draped Figure (Dover Anatomy for Artists)

ePub Drawing the Draped Figure (Dover Anatomy for Artists) by George B. Bridgman in Arts-Photography

Description

Many art students and professionals have mastered the art of depicting unclothed figures; but still have trouble accurately rendering clothing or other forms of draped cloth. Part of the problem mdash; before this book came along mdash; was that there was a lack of concise and simple instruction on the subject; and much that was written was too vague to be helpful. This comprehensive; well-illustrated book was created to solve the problem. In these pages George Bridgman mdash; a longtime instructor at New Yorks Art Student League and one of the nations foremost teachers of figure drawing mdash; offers expert advice on depicting draped figures. "Clothing is none other than a drapery arranged around a body that is beneath it. To express the multitudinous forms it takes; one should learn to express in a direct way the different characters of folds; for each one plays its individual part as distinctly apart as actors play their different characters upon the stage."Students learn the characteristics of seven different kinds of folds and how to render them; including pipe; zigzag; spiral; half-lock; diaper pattern; drop; and inert folds. Mastery of these principles is the key to realistic portrayal of garments; as well as the proper rendering of cloth in still lifes. The straightforward; easy-to-follow text is illustrated by 200 of Bridgmans own sketches and diagrams; reproduced from pencil renderings in crisp halftones. Art students; teachers; and professionals alike are sure to welcome this inexpensive republication of a practical; hands-on manual by a master of figure drawing.

I am a creative being and crafting is my go to hobby for relaxation. I wanted to make shirts with my little cousins this summer so I bought a dye kit; and I thought; well it would be nice if I had a book on it because I love color. This book is absolutely well written; its is great for a beginner; and I think its good reference for more advanced tie-dyers. It will have a permament place in my library.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Must have for anyone interested in tie dye!By cfcreateI must first say that I am just beginning in tie dye; I have only made a few t shirts. This is my first book on the subject. I love this book! Shabd starts by giving an explanation of tie dye around the world. This may or may not interest you; it did interest me since I want to learn everything I can about tie dye.The author goes on to explain what you will need to begin; color theory; what type of fabric is best for tie dye and then right into some awesome projects. There are additional tips throughout; giving you ideas on how you might make it a different way. She includes instructions for 22 projects; ranging from clothing to home decor items. I plan on making at least 15 and have ordered my dyes for half of them!Highly recommended if you want to learn tie dye!9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Great ideasBy FlexyAfter getting by monthly DIY box from Brit and co; this month was tie dye. Wanting to know more I went to their blog and they raved about this book and a specific type of dye (its talked about in the book). So I ordered it. Ive now spent many not so lazy days using all the techniques shown. And it gives lots of history and knowledge on tie dyeing.
