ebooks Drawings of Albrecht Duuml;rer (Dover Fine Art; History of Art) by From Dover Publications in Arts-Photography

Description

Originally published in Munich in 1914; this selection of Albrecht Duuml;rers finest drawings by the great art historian Heinrich Wouml;fflin has long been regarded as a basic book in the arts. It has gone through many editions in Europe; even though this is its first appearance in English.Professor Wouml;fflin selected 81 drawings by the master both for their individual interest and for the light they cast on Duuml;rers artistic growth and evolution. They begin with the self-portrait Duuml;rer drew at the age of 13 in 1484 and end with his Head of Saint Mark; done in 1526; approximately two years before his death. Included are many favorites as well as many works that are little known. Of special interest are sketches that Duuml;rer prepared for famous works in other media; such as drawings for the famous woodcut series The Life of the Virgin.Professor Wouml;fflins penetrating essay; which is considered one of the foundations of modern art criticism; has been translated by Stanley Appelbaum.Several features have been added to this Dover edition of Duuml;rers drawings: a revised statement on ownership of originals; bibliographical note; Winkler numbers; and a new Foreword by Alfred Werner; art critic and lecturer.

Unique- 41 Musicians are the Author (in a way)By jamesjazzyQuite a unique format in that the book is devised as a "Question-Answer" format "hitting" on a lot of interesting topics answered by 41 different Improvisers both new and veteran performers. So...its not just an Authors opinion.... in a way the 41 Musicians them selves wrote the Book. Very similar to say a Down Beat Magazine interview but with 41 performers. Excellent selection of Free Jazz musicians interviewed. A mere 9 pages of Photos knocked off half a Star.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A must for anyone interested in improvised music from the late 20th. and 21st. century.By john yarlingMusic and the Creative Spirit is exactly what I was looking for. Different artists discussing similar questions with a nod towards the modern/current culture they work and live in.This is not for anyone looking strictly into the past. This is about the musics that grew out of the 60s free/avant garde movement and more modern mainstream playing of the same era.As a professor of music I found this book to be a great source of information for young students who want to try and understand how these artists "think" about their music. It is an interesting read and an informative one.6 of 9 people found the following review helpful. about cultural and sociological state of jazzBy donnaI bought this expensive book on the recommendation of Pat Metheny (on his website); who is one of the interview subjects in the book.I have found the book disappointing and frustrating. I guess I was hoping/expecting the musicians interviewed to be asked and respond to questions about learning and playing music; but there is very little of this. Instead the author endeavors to keep the conversation on the cultural and sociological status of jazz in contemporary culture. There is very little about music or musicianship; though occasionally one of the artists will mention these things in spite of the interviewers sociologically oriented questions. Often the musicians are being asked questions that are really outside the sphere of music; and call for cultural criticism. Some of the artists interviewed do have opinions about the broader cultural and sociological background milieu in which jazz is performed and thus are able to discuss these matters intelligently with the interviewer. If your interest is in the current status of jazz in contemporary culture; this is the book for you. If your interest is in the music that the interview subjects play; you will not find much here.
