A much-needed guide..wish Id had this kind of start.By BeginnersMindAn essential guide for violin students of all levels and teachers of string instruments. It could; as well; be of great interest to anyone interested in developing a deeper understanding and appreciation of violin performance. I find the information to be presented in a logical; useful; well-organized format; augmented by Dana Dukes photographs. Professor Rush very clearly elucidates the fundamentals of set-up for the right and left hands; and of integration of right and left together. He offers vivid; finely detailed practical pointers on bowing; vibrato; and practicing. I would wish anyone picking up the violin for the first time to have the benefit of this compendium of wisdom about a good set-up; and think that it would also prove helpful for more advanced students who are working to "rehab" issues with playing; whether in terms of sound or physical form. This has been immediately helpful to me; to have more insight and understanding to apply to my own development with the instrument.7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. great bookBy Nathan Grammaticoi bought this book many for vibrato and how to hold the violin etc. this book is great. almost every aspect of this book is covered by a pro. picture.it teaches you posture and other things essential for self-teaching yourself the violin. this book is great for beginners and those that intermediates which need to fine-tune their skillsmatthew G10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Indispensable guideBy G. MorrisI am attempting to self-teach myself violin. (I am not entirely a newbie -- I play piano and guitar.) This book and a mirror are indispensable for setup (holding the violin; posture; holding the bow; bowing mechanics; etc). Be aware however; that thats what it is. It is not a method book.
