GOOD; BUT...By AQUARELLEMary Whyte is a superb and superlative watercolorist--perhaps even exceeding the skill of icons John Singer Sargeant and Winslow Homer. Her collection is awe-inspiring. Unfortunately; this publication printed the works far too dark--much of the brushwork and background is impossible to see. One of the most admirable aspects of Whytes work is how she ranges from intense detail in the center of interest to hazy suggestion at the outer edges; making it all work together for a harmonious whole. Before Whyte; most artists would have believed that it wasnt possible to unite extreme detail and extreme looseness in one painting; you would have to choose one or the other for a single work. In this book; the dark printing makes the transition from loose to fine brushwork difficult to see. The basic compositions; of course; are clear and ground-breaking in their sweeping inclusion of scene; context; and personality-revealing elements. (Perhaps the poor quality of the printing was deliberate--Ive decided Ill need to go to the showing of the works themselves in Savannah to see the brushwork and actual coloring; which is probably what Whytes promoters want most.)13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Beautiful bookBy TessThis is a wonderful book of Marys paintings of working people in the south. Each painting captures a person or a few people doing a hard days work and often at a job that is now disappearing. No one does watercolor portraiture better than Mary and the way she paints skin; wrinkles; shadows; and expressions is so convincing. This is about each persons story and their locale... this is not a "how to" book that demonstrates how to do each painting and what paint colors to use; etc. It is simply a book of gorgeous; thoughtful paintings to be enjoyed.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
