Great Start; But Takes Time to Learn the System...By Jeff WedgwoodI have folded several basic butterflies; and this kit looked like just the thing to create more life-like butterflies! AND IT CAN!However; I was disappointed with a few things:1) The COLORS used in the instructions on several butterflies were the REVERSE of the photo of the finished model (all the paper in the kit is colored on BOTH sides). So; the first time you make one; it is easy to become confused.2) For EVERY model the first several steps are from a set of folds which are diagrammed only in the first half of Book One. This means that while working on the BUTTERFLIES in Book One; you do a lot of page turning back to the intro until you have memorized those steps (about a dozen butterflies or so).3) There was only ONE typo; but it was a whopper - the duplication of a full paragraph on page 37 in book 2.4) Often the text or picture of a complex fold was just too small for my aging eyes to see well enough to understand. I had to use a magnifying glass. Maybe that is a criticism of me and not the book....Having said all that; once you "get it" and can remember the basic folds; you can stop all the page turning. Then you can see where the artistic details come into play; and you can see the genius of the author; as well as end up with some BEAUTIFUL BUTTERFLIES !!.I cannot really recommend this kit for beginning Origami students. But for motivated; intermediate or higher folders; this could give you hours if not days of challenging work with wonderful results. It just takes patience to follow LaFosses technique. Also; I would suggest to (or beg of) the authors that they put out a 2nd Edition (to remove that typo fix the colors in either the photos or the diagrams) and to completely separate the introdutory fold diagrams (put them ALL in Book One) from the individual Butterfly instructions (put them ALL in book Two). Also; please make the books full-size (8.5"x11") with all the images bigger to match; especially the enlarged detailed folds. Now THAT would be a 5-star kit and well worth recommending to anyone!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Not for kidsBy Cathy P.This is not for children. I got this as a gift but this is so hard to follow the incomplete directions. They show you the standard folds for most of their butterflies and then go into the folding of each one. This would have been better with a video instead.2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Not for beginners - badly-written directionsBy Sam--This book is being marketed as if its a beginners book; but it is not a good book for beginners; primarily because the directions are actually pretty badly-written. I wanted to post some examples in the now-defunct customer gallery; but frankly; it feels as if the directions were a incompletely-proofed draft for LaFosses subsequent butterfly books. His 2013 book with the DVD; in particular; has much better diagrams.--The reader is constantly referred to instructions elsewhere in this (kit) book - which is not inherently a bad strategy; but since the models in this book are variations on a theme; the diagrams on the "other" pages do not necessarily look like the model youre folding. That would still be OK if the diagrams for the model youre actually folding clearly showed how your model differs from the diagrams on the "other" pages; but that critical information can be skimpy or lacking altogether.--Some of the directions have pretty appalling omissions and errors - text not attached to the correct diagram; steps left out and direction of rotation not specified; for example.--On the other hand; the models and the system are truly remarkable; which makes this book well worth borrowing from the library if you a) are at least an intermediate folder with lots of experience dealing with lousy diagrams or b) have folded several of the models in the 2013 book.--If you ended up with this book rather than one of LaFosses subsequent butterfly books (his 2013 book with the DVD or his 2007 book "Origami Butterflies: A Field of Discovery Through a System of Design); look on the preview for his 2013 book for the "Alice Gray" butterfly. The directions are much better and will help you work around the deficiencies of the kit book. The 2007 book still needs work - its almost the same as the kit book + a couple extra models and a few corrections; but the images are bigger; which makes it easier to use when the directions arent quite correct. Beginners should definitely get the 2013 book (well-reviewed on the OrigamiUSA website) rather than the kit book. Directions for the "Alexander Swallowtail" from the kit book are also online - see the above OrigamiUSA review for more information. If youre frustrated with the Origamido Butterfly directions in the kit book; get your hands on a copy of LaFosses Advanced Origami; which has great directions for that particular model.--Finally; I cant understand why other customers liked the kit paper; which is fairly thick; shiny; not particularly strong; hard to crease and leaves white marks at the creases once you succeed in creasing. I have discovered a great use for the paper though - it makes terrific scanned images for instructions. Because white marks are left at the creases; you can fold the paper; scan it and easily find the white marks to annotate in Photoshop.
