Excellent readBy BofyThis third book of Walkers series of works on design for sustainability further builds on the ideas elaborated on his previous works. In a world where eco-modernism tends to become mainstream designers need radical new ideas to lead them away from reducing unsustainability and towards creating sustainable solutions. The book does not try to offer THE answer but presents the possibilites and the characteristics of what sustainable design is; from there on; its on our (the practioners hands). The only downside to the book is the insertion of some color-printed pages oposed to using the same high quality print on the whole book...1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A work of deep importance for design and sustainabilityBy Craig BadkeStuart Walkerrsquo;s work is original and groundbreaking in the field of design for sustainability. It goes far beyond looking at the world lsquo;out therersquo;; whether that be the enormous issues of climate change and geopolitical economics; of cultural; social; or environmental exploitation; or technology; media and consumerism; and shows us how to look inward to where real lsquo;radicalrsquo; change begins; the very root of our unsustainability.Poetic and eloquent; his latest book; Designing Sustainability; represents a deep maturing of the authorrsquo;s message and presents an expansive holistic vision of sustainability tied to personal understandings of place and being. Walker demonstrates through creative exploration an important and meaningful role for design; capable of addressing both the instrumental and the ineffable aspects of our humanity.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Refreshing discourseBy Anne Marchand"Designing Sustainability: Making radical changes in a material world" is an essential work that will stimulate creative thinking in academia as well as in the design studio.Stuart Walkers distinctive discourse is refreshing. His approach to research through design contributes to a fundamental reflection where new understandings and issues arise. Walkers propositional objects illustrate philosophical alternatives to the dominant way of thinking about the material world and the good life. This book is a must read for scholars and students seeking to broaden their horizons by exploring the relationship between design and spirituality as key to revisiting the meanings and implications of sustainability.
