Refreshingly diverse Collection makes for wonderful read!By LaunaI was so pleased to read this collection of "Best American Short Plays;" one of my favorite to date in an excellent series. In this edition; editor Demastes really has put his money where his mouth is in terms of promoting a diverse array of playwrights and plays; with luminaries such as John Guare; Neil LaBute; and A. R. Gurney juxtaposed with virtually unknown but talented newcomers. And thats not all - I was especially pleased to see a one-person play for a change and two knockout pieces about Los Angeles that were quite good (kudos to Demastes for demonstrating that drama produced by or about LA is as dramatically rich and compelling as the best the genre has to offer). As for the plays themselves; my absolute favorite was the brilliant "Bulgarian Rhapsody" by Rich Orloff; which underneath all the hilarity is actually a pretty poignant dissection of the death of the American Dream. "Warner Bros" and "Starf*cker;" the two LA pieces; were highlights as well - I found Warner Bros the most moving of the bunch and thought "Starf*cker" a metatheatrical gem with one of the best endings Ive ever read in a 10-minute. The rest of the pieces range from great to good - there are a couple I would call cute rather than compelling and one or two that feel like clever concepts that have not yet been fully fleshed out with dramatic arcs and conflict; but overall I would recommend this collection to any fans of the form or anyone looking for a good read in general. And for you playwrights out there; Jules Tascas delightfully scathing send-up of the creative process "Play Development or If Hamlet Had Been a Reading" is worth the price alone.
