Over the past two decades; French artist Pierre Huyghe has produced an extraordinary body of work in constant dialogue with temporality. Investigating the possibility of a hypothetical mode of timekeeping -- "parallel presents" -- Huyghe has researched the architecture of the incomplete; directed a puppet opera; founded a temporary school; established a pirate television station; staged celebrations; scripted scenarios; and journeyed to Antarctica in search of a mythological penguin. In this first book-length art historical examination of Huyghe and his work; Amelia Barikin traces the artists continual negotiation with the time codes of contemporary society. Barikin finds in Huyghes projects an alternate way of thinking about history -- a "topological historicity" that deprograms (or reprograms) temporal formats. Barikin offers pioneering analyses of Huyghes lesser-known early works as well as sustained readings of later; critically acclaimed projects; including No Ghost Just a Shell (2000); LExpeacute;dition scintillante (2002); and A Journey That Wasnt (2005). She emphasizes Huyghes concepts of "freed time" and "the open present;" in which anything might happen. Bringing together an eclectic array of subjects and characters -- from moon walking to situationist practices; from Snow White to Gilles Deleuze -- Parallel Presents offers a highly original account of the driving forces behind Huyghes work.

Not a typography book though so if youre looking for in-depth typography book with type history; type anatomy; etc.; this is not the one.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Required Reading for Typography IBy Michael BurkeI had to read this book for my Beginning Typography class at Columbia College Chicago. Going into the class I really knew nothing about typography except for the names of some fonts. Not only does Ellen Lupton do a fantastic job explaining just about everything youve ever wanted; or needed to know about Typography - there are lots of elements discussed that will give you a better understanding of design in general. This book is not a critique on fonts; nor is it a book on how to design them. While this book explains what a font is; you learn a lot about what the visual representation of a word is comprised of (text) and how to use these representations (text) in the various ways in design; and how they have been used in the past. After reading this book you should be familiar with almost all of the typographers jargon (terms; vocal); and you will have a better understanding of how to organize text in a design.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A great book for the fledgling graphic designerBy A.H.I discovered Ellen Lupton through skillshare. This book is a wealth of information for those who want to know more about the art of type; but more importantly why some fonts work for certain design and others dont. Thats the lesson I was looking for. Concrete examples as to why this font adds meaning to my project while this and just "works" while other fonts do not. A great book for the fledgling graphic designer.
