Would prefer more information; less of "look what I did"By DrumthumbPretty good book that reads like a primer for music direction in the music theater. There are a great deal of personal anecdotes about the authors experiences. There is also a great deal of information about the hierarchy of personnel in the theater - not sure why that couldnt be presented in a flow-chart or tree-type chart. I could do without the Luddite section about technology; its here and there are people who are very good at it. The whole goal of technology use in the pit is to have precisely the same show night after night. Also; I cant help but feel that the book could have been condensed into a lean 100 pages or so if the author didnt put his resume up every 3-4 paragraphs.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. This book will be required reading for every musician!By Anthony A. TorelliThis is the work of a Master! This book has long been a necessity and it was worth the wait! The author details all aspects of a musical production from the first idea to opening night and everything in between! Calling upon his impressive and extensive resume and career; the author; Joseph Church; leads the reader on a very detailed journey from the music directors point of view on how a Broadway musical is put together and all the responsibilities; artistry and integrity required! This is a must read for everyone who takes on the role of music director from the amateur to the professional. As a professional music director I found this book to be very helpful and will continue to be a valuable resource in my own work!Bravo; Maestro Church on a job very well done!!1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I particularly liked the appendix in which he outlined how to conduct ...By JAMES HARVEYAs an aspiring music director; Ive often been frustrated by the lackof training and literature available for the craft. A textbook on thesubject is long overdue and thankfully I found this one extremelyinformative and accessible. It manages to cover all of the many tasksrequired by a music director (orchestration; arranging; conducting;casting; etc) and the author clearly has a ton of practical experienceto draw from. I particularly liked the appendix in which he outlinedhow to conduct songs from ldquo; In the Heights" and ldquo; The Lion King" inexhaustive detail. It was frustrating that the scores for those numbers werenrsquo;t included; but it was still a great resource.
