Music magazines have transcribed to death a few of the songs from Tommy; but the quality of the music as music and as guitar playing has long cried out for a complete transcribed version. This volume is a no-brainer for guitar players who recognize Townsends creative voice in both electric and acoustic guitar playing. He created a unique sonic identity in his blend of harmony; melodic figure; and rhythm that has never been copied or equaled.Townsends influence on Jimi Hendrix went beyond the visual (Jimi took Townsends stage act lock; stock and two smokin barrels; cranked it up with Owsley acid; and gave it a new meaning as making love to music) to the musical; e.g;; the use of suspended chords and power chords; the use of volume and feedback; using the toggle switch as a musical effect; and the all-important adoption of the Marshall stack (which was developed by the late and great father of loud; Jim Marshall; in response to Petes request for a cabinet that wouldnt break his roadies backs; or so the story goes).Tommy has been transcribed in full in the multi-volume Who collection published by Hal Leonard; but the pieces are scattered alphabetically throughout the four volumes. That said; the Hal Leonard set is also an essential for those whio cannot get enough of Townsends inimitable guitar writing and performances.Alfred has had the great sense to not only publish the rock-opera in its entirety; but also in the order of the record/CD tracks; rather than in alphabetical order; which makes it surprisingly easier to flip to a song you want than using an alphabetical table of contents or to read along with the music. The visual layout of the tab/music staves and the high quality of the physical crafting of the book only add to the musical joy this long-awaited volume gives.Note to Alfred: Please publish the full transcriptions of the Whos Live at Leeds and Live at the Isle of WIght. Only a few pieces from either of those two great shows have ever been transcribed in the US or the UK. On-line tabs are often dodgy in terms of accuracy or completeness and suffer from that visually awkward improvised layout.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Classic Rock OperaBy Really! If you have never listened to The Whos Tommy; you truly dont understand what the 60s music movement was all about. The album changed the entire concept of rock music. Instead of unrelated individual songs; an entire story is pieced together from the first to the last song. They are all interconnected and relate to Pete Townsends underlying theme. I can never listen to this work of art too much.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The 1st ever Rock Opera; here transcribedBy JilooWhen you love The Who music; you need this book ; even if not playing guitar : you get the lyrics to sing your songs of the last 40 years.Book contents very good pics ; even photos a hand written pages of lyrics by Pete Townshend.Of course ; a good guitarist will take the best out of these tabs; and other guitarists will dream with them.
