English Children's Costume 1775-1920 (Dover Fashion and Costumes)

DOC English Children's Costume 1775-1920 (Dover Fashion and Costumes) by Iris Brooke in Arts-Photography

Description

Late in the 18th century; English childrens apparel began to look different from that worn by their elders. The reason; says writer James Laver in his introduction; is that someone finally realized children were different! This engaging book records those changes; with illustrations depicting styles at five- or ten-year intervals; from 1775 to 1920. 32 black-and-white illustrations.

EdelmanA fair amount of the beginning material in this book is taken from from Chuck Shers longer book; The Improvisors Bass Book; and the prospective buyer might wonder if it would not be a better idea to buy the longer (200+ pages vs 93 pages) Improvisors method rather than this book; particularly as the longer book (in the print version) is only $2 more. WHile the more advanced player with a solid knowledge of theory might do well with the Improvisors Method; I think this book is a much better choice for the starting bassist. It contains a number of things that the longer book doesnt; like basic M7; m7 and dom7th chords spelled out in all 12 keys; and the associated scales (Major; Minor; Mixolydian) spelled out in all 12 keys. This is a great help for the beginner who is encountering these ideas for the first time. After mastering the material in this book the aspiring bassist will be able to play simple (if not particularly interesting) lines for standard tunes. At that point a good book to look at would be one of Steve Mooneys books; like Standard Lines - Jazz standard Bebop bass lines - Bass Tab Edition (Constructing Walking Jazz Bass Lines). While there are a number of great bass line construction books; this is one of the few that actually takes the student through all 12 keys instead of just providing lines in Bb and suggesting that the student apply the ideas learned to other keys. Having interesting; yet basic; playable lines written out is a great help to the beginning bassist.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. practice makes betternessBy A Guy From BurbankExactly what it says: Foundation Exercises. Ive been working with this book for a little over a month and already can feel my relationship with my instrument improving. I play bass for money twice a week with guys who make a living at it. Fortunately; I dont have to rely on music to eat; but it is nice to make money playing bass. So. Im a semi-pro player and would recommend this book for anyone who wants interesting; fun and challenging pieces to work on. I include 20 minutes of this book in my 30-60 minutes every couple of days.Go for it.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. and this is a great next step instruction for himBy T-WormBought this book for my son; who has been playing bass for a year and a half.He started out with the "Hal Leonard Bass Method - Complete edition"; and this is a great next step instruction for him.
