Best value jazz bookBy music fanLike a lot of aspiring jazz musicians; Ive accumulated a stack of practice and practice cd books; from improvization; style; scale and chord books to transcription ones. Hands down; this book is the best value and taught me more than any other. The book covers the following each in their own chapter: modal playing; substitution and reharmonization; new scales; triads and pentatonics; and solo playing. Within these chapters he covers walking bass; stride styles; as well as bebop and post-bop styles. Best of all though is the combination of original compositions which are based on the particular thing being taught--you can hear these on the separately sold cd--which starts the tune with the rhythm section and then drops out the piano part to let you play. The charts are easy to read; and Baerman provides just enough explanation--not too much and not too little.
