If You Own or are Into Vintage Ampegs; This Book Is a Must!By Dan the ManWhile the writing is a little obtuse at times the content is outstanding tho its all as of 1999. Certainly this doesnt affect the historical information on the company nor its products but some of the vacuum tube availability has certainly changed. The books is more or less chronological with extensive sections inserted in the overall story for products/technologies and product time-lines. I found the appendix especially usefull since it deals with how to decode component manufacturers and the EIA (created by military during WW-II) date encoding as well as Ampeg serial number sequencing and encoding whihc actually changed a couple times over the years. The appendix also includes usefull discussion on tubes; repair and parts/tubes; some key service bulletin references for trouble shooting some known nitty problems; and some good contact info. If youre considering this book youll want to check out sites like fliptops.net; mojotone and antique electronic supply; among others. Though definately not a technical or troubleshooting guide to Ampeg products; If youve visited any of those sites in the vein of fixing/refurbing an Ampeg; orjust have general interest in the history; products or politics revolving around Ampeg I think you will enjoy reading this book. Lots of good insights and information into the products and the business of what was arguably one of the (if not THE) very finest makers of instrument amplifiers and the changing climate and culture over the years as well as Ampegs stodgy and slow; then meteroic rise ...eventual near demise ...its re-rise ...and its status at every stage along the way ...through 1999.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. very good book for the person needing factual information on Ampeg ...By Edward Scott Allenvery good book for the person needing factual information on Ampeg History; Jess Oliver signed this copy for me when I visited in his home in 20060 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Ampeg: The Story Behind the SoundBy R. RothIve been an Ampeg owner since 1956 having owned many different models. Few people today know where the name Ampeg came from. "Amplifier" and "Peg". Everett Hull; a hard of hearing upright bass player; designed the first pick up replacing the peg of a string bass with a long peg that had a micorphone installed on the end of it which positioned the mic near the sound post of the bass. It was the best bass pick up for decades. It is no longer manufactured. Ampeg also produced thousands of Baby Basses which was an electronic solid body upright bass; much smaller than a string bass; but with a full string bass fret board. Although the Baby Bass is no longer produced they are still popular with the South American tango bands and Salsa bands in the U.S. The Baby Bass has a sound that exactdly duplicates the sound of a string bass. Today there are many clones on the market; but none has that Ampeg sound.
