Richly detailed if flawed history of the music industrys troubled digital transitionBy billrosenblattRichly detailed history of the upheaval in the music business during the transition from CDs to digital; from the perspective of the major labels and with particular emphasis on EMI and Warner Music Group - and relatively little about Universal Music Group; the largest of the majors. Hardy is a financial journalist; so he focuses on the business aspect rather than on pop stars and so on.Two things make there book tough going at times. One is the constant barrage of numbers - earnings; profit margins and so on; the kind that youd find in Financial Times newspaper stories. The other is the serious lack of copy editing - hundreds of spelling and punctuation errors; and some factual errors that I caught (and who knows how many I didnt). But otherwise worthwhile reading for students of the music industry. Its particularly valuable as a story of what happened from the perspective of the major labels rather than Silicon Valley.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Good book; useless editingBy Christian GrausThe book is excellent; but the proof reading was beyond a joke; making the book almost unreadable. Examples include inserted words; missing worlds; misspelled words ( Coldplay was spelled Coldpay one time; Wal-Mart was spelled Wall Mart one time ); and basically wrong statements ( such as a break down of profits from the apple store that added up to 89 cents for a 99 cent track ). Page 309 is my favourite; it contains the phrase: some with careers stretching back to the 190s and 197070s. I do think that the author underestimates the impact of downloads; and yet focuses on the fall in revenues that they brought; but my rating would be 3-4 stars if the book was readable.
