Helpful and EnjoyableBy JasonThis book is an enjoyable; instructive read that anyone involved in performing vocally (not only opera) should find helpful. The comparison to the only other book of its kind; Great Singers on Great Singing by Jerome Hines; is both inevitable and illuminating. Whereas that book basically asked a few very technical questions to each singer (with follow up questions based on their replies); and presented each interview separately in its entirety; this book is arranged by subject - it asks a question; then presents each singers reply; with no follow up. However; the questions in this book are far more numerous and varied; and are not limited to technical vocal production. This is where the book shines and in this respect it is superior to its predecessor. On the other hand; whereas Jerome Hines interviewed both younger singers and much older singers (Jan Peerce etc); the authors of this book failed to interview the older living legends of our time; such as Domingo; Carreras; and Horne. It is for this age bias that I subtract one star (The ultimate book would be one where the questions from this book would be asked to the singers from the earlier book!). Also; the intro to each chapter; which includes quotes from the chapter; is superfluous and a bit silly; we will be reading these quotes within the chapter; why make us read it twice?!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Should be titled Great Singers on Great Singing: Volume TwoBy M. RiceIt is profoundly disappointing that the writers of this book -- which is a copy in nearly every way; except for the singers interviewed; of Jerome Hines book Great Singers on Great Singing -- decided to pretend that their idea was original and not give any credit to Hines. Fortunately; many of the singers interviewed do have a sense of history and have given credit to the many great singers whove gone before them.Other than the disturbing choice to ignore Hines book; the interviews and insights in this book are remarkable. It is a must-read for any singer wondering how various teachers and singers can hold opposite views on issues of importance to every classical singer! Highly recommended; with one caveat: buy it along with Hines book; and read the opinions of the great singers of not so long ago (1982) along with the great singers of today.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Masterfully written book containing a wealth of knowledgeBy Sean FahyThe best way to cultivate the voice is not to think about it but to make it a matter of musical expression. But how do you as a singer get to that point? The successful singer might be an example of the survival of the fittest; especially when you read of the stories of some of these artists. They go through the first studies of the voice in conservatories; universities and the like; progressing on through different methods of vocal study and voice teachers. Some have a change in their voice or Fach; which then encompasses new vocal study and new roles and repertory. The book also includes tips on vocal health; practice; memorization and many other things necessary for the singer. I can recommend this book as an interesting read and a guide to having a career in singing. Bravo to Donald George and Lucy Mauro for bringing such insight to the world of classical singing.
