Arvo Pauml;rt is one of the most influential and widely performed contemporary composers. Around 1976 he developed an innovative new compositional technique called tintinnabuli (Latin for sounding bells); which has had an extraordinary degree of success. It is frequently performed around the world; has been used in award-winning films; and pieces such as Fuuml;r Alina and Spiegel im Siegel have become standard repertoire. This collection of essays; written by a distinguished international group of scholars and performers; is the essential guide to Arvo Pauml;rt and his music. The book begins with a general introduction to Pauml;rts life and works; covering important biographical details and outlining his most significant compositions. Two chapters analyze the tintinnabuli style and are complemented by essays which discuss Pauml;rts creative process. The book also examines the spiritual aspect of Pauml;rts music and contextualizes him in the cultural milieu of the twenty-first century and in the marketplace.

LesterThis book is fine about understanding what a fiddle is and how to select one and probably how to properly hold the fiddle and bow but it also has some serious flaws. Well; some might be chalked up to needing better proof reading like when it talked about re-tuning the fiddle D;D;A;D. It said that the first D was the old G; correct; followed by the A and the D that used to be the old D instead of the old E. Rather minor but it could be confusing to those who are confused alreadyThen there was the section on placing fingering stickers on the finger board. The author said to tune the D string to as close to a perfect pitch as possible and then pluck the D string as you move you finger down the finger board (it would have been if he discussed down and up because they seem to be opposite what one would think) until the tuner indicates a perfect E and then place a sticker. He said that it should be basically in line with the thumb sticker; which he had described earlier. It wont be; it will be lower. The fingering position just below the nut on the D string in line with the thumb sticker is D sharp/E flat. If you go to the accompanying diagram it looks like they are labeling that position E; which it isnt and the accompanying table (6-1) is also wrong. Figure 15-2 shows notes on the E string. It illustrates the G and the A notes beside each other with no accidental note (G sharp/A flat) between themAs far as teaching the keys one at a time; I guess that thats a matter of teaching philosophy. A student will eventually have to learn what each of the keys are regardless if they try to use this book or take lessons but; at least in learning the mandolin which has the same tuning; I think that it was easier to stack out with the key of C and learn the other keys by modifying my finger placement from there.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Worth Every Cent and More; Regardless of Experience LevelBy LichenI am an older adult who dabbled in violin for a few years as a kid; but want to take up learning to fiddle. I have lifelong knowledge of music - by age nine I had been taught so much music theory I could transpose keys on paper. So I was looking for a resource that would teach me care and maintenance of a violin; and some technique. I am so pleased with this book; and its much more than I paid for. I actually read every word of the pages on reading music and theory; just out of curiosity. This is a valuable resource for the beginner musician and experienced alike. Well worth the price; in fact I bought it for Kindle and Im considering ordering the hard copy as well.NOTE TO AUTHOR: Im an editor by trade. I noticed that in the Chapter on Rhythm; Figure 8.1 shows a song using all quarter notes; although the accompanying text refers to the half-notes in the same figure.17 of 19 people found the following review helpful. from beginner to player; this is a good through book with videos and audio clipsBy sharpcheddarI finally started playing 2.5 years ago. since then it has been a marvelous ride! i wish this book was there when i first started because theres tons of things to weed through as a beginner; this book has it all even if you are a few years into playing there is much to gain from the fiuddle for dummies book. I got mine for my kindle and it works really great. This is a very educational tool; while some of the very basics are covered here; such as arm positioning; finger drills; bow tightening; hand positioning; tuning the fiddle; even how to replace strings; and much more; a beginner who doesnt know too much will appreciate the time the author took to guide you through it. its not just a book to read; but a true interaction like the teacher is right there because there are audio and video clips to listen and watch as you go along to learn. a few of some of the topics include1. Basic note pitches 2. difference between bows and their sounds; 3. slides 4. Demonstration of eighth notes; half notes; and quarter notes 5.Demonstration of Irish accents 6. Difference between an Irish grace note and a Scottish grace note 7. Tunneling with drones. 8. alternative tuning 9. Comparing the rhythm of a dotted eighth note and 16th note pair to a pair of two eighth notes those are only a smidgen of things in the book; but there are least 25 or more songs. it has 99 audio tracks and 29 videos. this is a bargain book with a professional violin tutor pro. It will get you playing in no time. Michael Sanchez the author over delivers on this book and his store superior violins has some of the most wonderful deals out there for the cost on instruments. His passion really shows for what he puts out there. this is a real review by someone who loves and plays this instrument and hope it will help other fiddly music makers to choose. if this review was helpful; give me a helpful thumbs up; i always want to know as i rely on reviewers to help me make good choices. I will follow up and re post updates as needed.
