DOC Florence in the Forgotten Centuries; 1527-1800: A History of Florence and the Florentines in the Age of the Grand Dukes by Eric Cochrane in Arts-Photography

Description

Abbeys of the middle ages remain some of the most wonderful of religious buildings. They were built with a firm sense of devotion; and with no expense spared; by communities which had a faith based upon venerable respect for the power and authority of the Church. The grace and majesty of their construction; and the beautiful rural settings of so many; make them a perfect destination for visitors throughout the year.Trevor Yorke; using diagrams; photographs and illustrations; explains the history of these buildings and describes how they were used in the centuries prior to the great Dissolution by Henry VIII in 1536; which left most of them in ruins.

When it arrived; I realized it was a book about Pecos; NM. (This is why it pays to read the description carefully!) I gave it to my relative; with a disclaimer and we had a good laugh. She loved it anyway.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Lovely bookBy jerri lanette lewisMy husband loved this book. Pecos is a wonderful guide for the traveler who wants more from his ...By SashaI just finished Paul Secords "Pecos;" from Arcadia Press. My only regret is that I didnt have the chance to read it prior to my recent trip there.Pecos is a wonderful guide for the traveler who wants more from his visit than to wander through unknown buildings and scenery. Instead; it brings that scenery; and the people who lived there; back to life. It provides one with key insights into the story of Pecosmdash;from its indigenous people; to the influence of the Spanish and Catholic Church; through a key Civil War battle; to mining; dude ranches; and on up to the present. The book has lots of photos; so its engaging; while quick and easy to get through. Mr. Secords writing is concise; sprinkled with occasional humor. Overall; the book is informative; as opposed to poetic. If youre planning on a visit to New Mexico; this book will inform your journey; opening doors to both the past and present. For anyone interested in the history of New Mexico; this book will be of interest. For anyone actually visiting New Mexicomdash;and the Pecos area in particularmdash;its indispensableHaving read this book; Im looking forward to my next visit to Pecos with a new appreciation of the area and its history.
