Description

With dozens of classic miniature Japanese woodblock prints and informative text; this Japanese art book is an essential for print collectors.Of the many genres of ukio-e; perhaps the least known is that of the diminutive surimono produced by Utamaro; Kiyonaga; Hokusai; Hiroshige; and others. They were the small; relatively little-known woodblock prints of the Tokugawa era; produced in smaller numbers and better quality than the ukiyo-e prints as we know them today. This beautifully illustrated book; a collectors item; is based on the authors private collection of more than sixty years. It is a unique introduction to the background and aesthetic appreciation of the rare and elegant art form. Included in the pages are notes on technique; terminology; surimono collecting and commissioning; as well as biographies of known surimono artists; and a detailed list of surimono catalogs and exhibitions. The text is supplemented by 33 color plates; Index Glossary; and Annotated Bibliography.

Artist Carol Marine loved to paint. She loved it so much that she started to find distractions so she didnt have to do it. Any creative person has been there. You work hard on a project; give it your all; and then...nothing. No huge sales; no big break. Its just you and your piece of art. Now; what?Carol had done big gallery shows; created beautiful pieces of art; sold a few here and there; but never really was able to create a living by it. She became the infamous starving artist. She sought out advice from well-known artists and over and over again; she was whispered the same thing: do some art every single day.Blech.You mean I have to sit down and actually create something? Havent I already done that?It can be discouraging to be an artist and find yourself with a trunk full of creative endeavors and no where for them to go. Sometimes; you dont want them to leave. Sometimes; you cant have them leave by way of the garbage fast enough. Its a passion-pursuit; artistry; no matter if the medium is oil; acrylic; or words. Writers face the same dilemma. But; as it has always been said: we do what we do because we love it...and for no other reason. This doesnt mean we dont want to eat.We do.We really do.But; again; we have to face why we offer what we offer. For the love of creation and to see what we can come up with. Its just pure fun. Doesnt mean there isnt hard work associated with it; but why not love the work you do?Thats where Carols book takes us through the twists and turns of a career as an artist. This book is a treasure trove of interesting things. Not only does it go through the basics of painting (materials; value; composition; color mixing); but the artist-author shares her secrets to becoming a successful artist. She and her programmer husband created an unique website; www.DailyPaintworks.com; where non-juried artists (read: you dont have to prove your talent or be selected by a committee) post their daily works. Whatever you create can become part of an auction; an online sale or something to just admire. And because the pieces tend to be small (thats how you get one piece of work done every day or as often as you can); they tend to be less expensive; overcoming one of the most common hurdles to artistry. Big; beautiful paintings are wonderful; but not everyone can afford $10;000 for one piece of art.Carol tried to keep painting as she had before - big art pieces. But she found herself frustrated; even painting every day. She would spend weeks on something and then just wipe the slate clean if she wasnt happy. All artists and authors understand this. But; with a small project - a 6x6 canvas - you can play with lots of different mediums; textures; concepts; what-have-you and no matter how it comes out; tomorrow is literally a new day. This book is brilliant. It showcases Carols talent; as well as a myriad of others; and shows you the nuts and bolts of being an artist. The final chapters shed light on how to sell your art online; where to go; and how to stage it for photographs. Its a small; concise book that packs a punch. Well worth every penny (if I had paid for it - and I would have; twice over).*This book was given to me by Blogging for Books in exchange for an honest review. I honestly really liked it.To read more: http://divine-by-nature.blogspot.com/2015/02/book-review-daily-painting-by-carol.html54 of 55 people found the following review helpful. Inspiring; motivating and filled with tipsBy Parka[[VIDEOID:73e90117c35b888957c78ee7648df44f]]Inspiration works in strange ways. One artist inspires another; who inspire others. In Daily Painting; author and artist Carol Marine talks about how she was inspired by Duane Keiser whos another daily painter. So since 2006; Marine has been painting daily; and selling her work online.Marine talks about her experience on painting daily; where she finds inspiration and subjects to draw; techniques involved and how you can sell your paintings online. Its very inspiring and insightful. It certainly gives me the if-she-can-do-it-so-can-I feeling.Actually the book covers more technical topics. Here are the contents.1. How daily painting changed my life (and can change yours too!)2. My materials3. Subject matters4. Value5. Color mixing6. Drawing and proportion7. Composition8. Staying fresh and loose with oil9. Fighting artists block10. How to photograph and edit small paintings11. Tips for better online salesI really like the idea of painting small. Somethings the size of a blank canvas can be intimidating. Its difficult for a small painting to match a big one in terms of impact; but its likely to sell better because its more affordable. All these info are mentioned in the book. It also includes a chapter on subject matter that talks about the kind of subjects that work well on a small canvas.Marine uses oil as her main medium. However her tips and techniques can often apply to other media as well except for things specific to oil; such as wiping a canvas and starting over again.Throughout the book; there are many other artists being featured with examples of their paintings; sometimes with interviews; such as in the latter chapter on dealing with artist block. All paintings featured look beautiful and inspiring. The best part about the book is it shows you the possibility of selling your work online. Its a model that works for Marine and other painters. Ive went ahead and check out the listing of other artists and her paintings on eBay and some other websites and can see people buying at the listed price. Its great to see other artists make a living using this method and its something that anyone can get into. Its certainly very motivating. This is a great book for all artists. Highly recommended.(See more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my profile for the link.)133 of 142 people found the following review helpful. I am SO glad that I didntBy RaenaI pre-ordered this book; almost cancelled because I had purchased so many books lately. I am SO glad that I didnt!! This book is beautiful and full of valuable information. A friend looked through the book and immediately went to purchase one for herself. Carole is an oil painter; but this book is really for any medium. Personally I use acrylic and watercolor. My friend uses acrylic and pastel.
