I consider them classics and extremely useful. I hold them in the same esteem as the seminal works of Carlson and Gruppe. The problem some people might have; and its a legitimate concern is the quantity and quality of the color plates. Theyre not good and they arent good in the other works I mentioned either. Mr. Ballinger wrote in a clear easy going fashion. And; if you pay attention you will learn a great deal. His approach to a palette is very modern and I highly recommend trying it. He gives good advice on all the basics like composition; perspective; reflections on the water; as well as the best tool to drawing boats well I have run across.
