Thomas Nast-Father of "The Modern Cartoon."By Lee Roy EddieThomas Nast born September 27th 1846 and lived until 1902 is the undisputed "Father of the Modern Cartoon". I honestly believe that any professional illustrator would back this up. According to scholarly historians such as Jay G. Williams who lectured specifically on Thomas Nast at the 2005 Fox-Adler Lecture at Skidmore College; Thomas Nast is responsible for the symbol of the Democratic Donkey and the Republican Elephant. For children around the world the beneficent image of Santa Claus which we know today is attributed in a great deal to Thomas Nast which makes this book such a gem and such a precious gift for anyones intellect especially a child since his political works are so fiercely and frightfully powerful. I am just amazed at how little is known about an advocate of the underdog and a humanitarian who risked their life exposing corruption at a time when immigrants who could not read were able to become empowered from the most provocative and informative cartoons that todays illustrators use as a gauge for their art. From the Simpsons to South Park (documented from the commentary of the artists themselves) Thomas Nast is their master. I would give this book 7 stars if it were allowed. R. Crumb is just one such artist who attributed Thomas Nast as a major influence. How anyone can discourage the reading or purchasing of this book based on the fact that there is not a biography is paramount to writing that one should not eat apples that do not state the origin of the orchard!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Nast christmas drawingsBy BDunphVery cool artist -- one of the best yet hardly any information on the drawings or intent behind them. What a shame. However; still very cool stuff.
