Emergence - the process by which new and coherent structures; patterns and properties lsquo;emergersquo; from within complex systemsTraditional architecture starts from the premise that architectural structures are singular and fixed; and however well integrated are separate from their environment and context. Emergence requires that the opposite is true ndash; that those structures are complex energy and material systems that have a lifespan; exist as part of an environment of other active systems; and develop in an evolutionary way. This book; based on the authorsrsquo; internationally renowned Emergent Technologies and Design course at the Architectural Association in London; introduces a new approach to the practice of architecture. The authors use essays and projects to demonstrate the interrelationship of concepts such as emergence and self-organisation with the latest technologies in design; manufacturing and construction. With projects from their course; and critiques and commentary from some of the worldrsquo;s leading design theorists and practitioners; the authors of Emergent Technologies and Design have introduced a radical new way of understanding the way in which architecture is conceived; designed and produced.

An okay photo record of The Second Citys seamier sideBy Richardsson55Im giving the editors of this photo book three stars for their hard work digging through thephoto archives deep in the bowels of the Tribune Building. One of the editors of the bookappeared on Chicago Tonight where some of the best photos from this collection wereshown; so I didnt hesitate to buy a copy on . Unfortunately; the remaining photos-those that werent shown on the program-are; well... just okay; at best. Not a bad book; really;but I wish Id looked through a copy at my local bookseller before I bought. On a related note; I just received a copy of the 2015 Menards calendar with my SundayChicago Tribune. It features some wonderful photos of downtown Chicago from the 1930sand it was FREE! Oh well...guess Im more a fan of buildings than bandits.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Nice but.........By ed pinderI was excited to get this book and see real photos of the time. The photos are real but pretty ordinary. From the title to the disclaimer it gives the impression of crime scene photos and gangsters. I applaud the effort that must have gone into putting this book together but I found it rather -ordinary.
