William Shakespeare has his Chicago home!By SylviastelChicago is known as second city to the world but it is first rate theatrical city with innovative; creative; and versatile theatre companies. Chicago probably has the most regional Tonys with six recipients like Steppenwolf; Goodman; Victory Gardens; Lookingglass; Northlight ; and of course the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre. This book celebrates the silver anniversary of the Chicago Shakespeare Theaters history first at the Ruth Page Dance Studio and now with their own theater on the Navy Pier. The artistic director; Barbara Gaines; has been there all along with a vision of bring William Shakespeares works to audiences. From its humble beginnings; Gaines has transformed; revised; and updated his works without losing the authors true intentions.I truly believe Barbara Gaines deserves the American National Medal of the Arts and of course; the Kennedy Center Honors. This book is a collection of essays and articles about the works and the theatres presentation. Gaines is open minded and evolving Shakespeares works to reach more audiences. Gaines has taught me that Shakespeare can be both entertaining and enlightening. No two productions of the same play are alike. If I lived near Chicago; I would definitely see every production available. The Chicago theatre scene is more diverse and exciting than Broadway perhaps its also more affordable as well to the average ticket holder. If you want to know more about the Chicago Shakespeare Theater; this book is for you.I do recommend that there should be chronological list of plays with cast and crew members in the back to help better guide the reader. Too bad the photographs are in and white; colorized photographs would be better. Also; the Chicago Shakespeare Theater should have recorded past; present; and future productions and sell them on DVDs. I would love a collection.
