Created for Professionals but Helpful for HomeownersBy ckThis hefty book was created to guide students as they learn about the profession of interior design. It is thorough and specific; beginning with the history of design in regions around the world and culminating with modern concerns; including building codes; sustainability; and current trends.Text is clear and direct; suitable for students in the process of learning; as well as professionals who want a quick refresher on a specific subject; whether its color and light; optimal use of interior space; or interior heating and cooling designs.Exactly because Designing Interiors provides such a broad and yet specific survey of interior design; this book also is a valuable resource for non-professionals. Were working on an extensive remodel; and this book quickly became my constant companion. As a motivated amateur; it takes me longer than it would a design student to read a section; review the associated images; and distill information -- but Ive been able to do so.Many non-professionals have instincts about what works and what doesnt; but cant clearly explain their impressions and reactions to themselves; much less others. This book has given me a new vocabulary that enables me to converse with architects and contractors in a specific way; equally importantly; I now can more fully understand things they are trying to communicate with us; and questions they ask.Although we made a few choices earlier in the process that we would have made differently if Id read this book; we are using the sections on "usage zones" and working with our furnishings and other soft goods to counteract what we dont want to retrofit at this point. It also has helped with lighting and even paint colors so that rooms harmonize. My only nitpicks with this volume are ironically with its design. At more than 600 pages with a relatively thin self-cover; this book already is showing signs of wear. You may want to be prepared with clear sheets of adhesive to attach to the covers and wrap around the spine and trim edges.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Flawless ...By Dr. EThis text does not merely address the how; but also the why. I very much appreciate that the text explores the history of design before entering into the minutia of the field. In this sense; this text is entirely appropriate for classroom use. Likewise; while some texts remain strictly theoretical; I find that the extensive use of drawings; full-color photographs; schematics; diagrams; charts; etc. truly brings the text to life. This text embraces both classical elements as well as contemporary ones. There is even a nod toward the cutting edge.Applicable to students; there is an extensive glossary for a quick refresher before an exam. Furthermore; the writing is direct; as jargon-free as possible; and concise. Whether one is just beginning to study design or one is merely pursuing this for a quick update on codes or trends; the writing is most welcoming.Any professor would want to consider this for his/her class. Moreover; any person considering a career in interior design can easily grab this text and begin the learning process. From the simple to the sublime; from window treatment to glass-staircases; this text has everything you need to become successful in the field of design.
