Description

While Fernando Ortizs contribution to our understanding of Cuba and Latin America more generally has been widely recognized since the 1940s; recently there has been renewed interest in this scholar and activist who made lasting contributions to a staggering array of fields. This book is the first work in English to reassess Ortizs vast intellectual universe. Essays in this volume analyze and celebrate his contribution to scholarship in Cuban history; the social sciencesmdash;notably anthropologymdash;and law; religion and national identity; literature; and music. Presenting Ortizs seminal thinking; including his profoundly influential concept of transculturation; Cuban Counterpoints explores the bold new perspectives that he brought to bear on Cuban society. Much of his most challenging and provocative thinkingmdash;which embraced simultaneity; conflict; inherent contradiction and hybriditymdash;has remarkable relevance for current debates about Latin Americas complex and evolving societies.

His life with Shanna combined with the Hollywood Rockstar formula is an extremely interesting take on celebrity love and marriages. Obviously any blink fan will eat this up; but they will learn that Travis is a go-getter; a talented musician who has collaborated his way to the top. He doesnt take setbacks too seriously but loves his family with emotional depth. His plane crash shook him up; but rightfully so. It really put me in his shoes on how horrific it really was. This guy is a true go-getter and has worked for everything he has gotten.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Gosh; this book is really great!By C. DouellIt was enlightening in many aspects and so honest and real. I LOVED THAT! It was sad; but it was uplifting despite the unfortunate events. I read it to my child and was bleeping out the SoCal language; (smile). The story still read well; and we both learned. Travis issome kind of crazy genius; but his skill is pure passion for expression. I introduced my child to their music while reading through this book; and it helped to find in books what cannot be expressed through other forms of media alone.I explained the difference in culture and environment causes one to express themselves differently; kind of like an accent; yet environment plays a role for sure beyond language. It opened up lines of communication that we may not have had opportunity to discuss.WE LOVED THE BOOK ! God Bless. Thanks for sharing your experiences and how love and wisdom strengthened you.Id recommend this book to anyone. Its so much more than just another book about a musician; he is respected for good reason. He has a beautiful heart.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Big or small fanBy StevenIf you are a big Travis Barker fan:You know what happens after the first quarter of the book; or once he joins blink and maybe even a little before that happens too; you know the sequence of events; you know when major event are coming up; and you know the ending. However; this book does give you a very honest perspective from Travis; which is nice because he doesnt talk all that much and when he does he may come off as short or stuck-up. I knew he had collaborated with Gavin Edwards; so I expected a professional writer read/feel/language; however you can tell Travis was all for writing and providing feedback for Gavin about what was in this book. I felt like I was reading this out of Travis own notebook. At first I didnt like the flow; but once I realized that I was reading Travis own words I couldnt fault it; he only knows how to be one person. Bottom-line you really get to find out who Travis Barker is; what he is about; and why he acts the way he does. It all makes scene; it all comes together; it all makes you respect him even more.If you are some what of a Travis Barker fan: ^^^Read the last two sentences above^^^
