Reading those pesky steenth restsBy drew georgopulosThis was a great approach that asks you to forget about how you were introduced to reading by substituting beats for notes. The author uses twinkle and star from twinkle twinkle little star to signify a pair of eighth notes and a quarter note; then enhances the example for 6/8 with "Follow the yellow brick road". Armed with those examples; you can begin to liberate yourself from 1 and 2 and....the problem is; by chapter 3 the author admits that not every rhythmic figure will conveniently fit into a famous word based relationship or phrase.I cheated and used a Boss metronome that subdivides the beat into eighths or steenths; so i ran the metronome and did the examples by clapping. It was a watershed day. I no longer have doubts or anxiety about reading now.Another insight gleaned from the text was the value of doubling the time signature to simplify a complex figure; where the author shows you how 4/4 and 2/4 are related by simplifying the notation while pointing out the simplification has everything to do with accent or emphasis; but nothing to do with tempo. Other arcana of ties; triplets; dots and implied note gotchas are also demystified. Well worth the time; money and effort to change your mind about how to read.I loved it.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Good book for beginners and seasoned folks who need a refresherBy T. DahlIve been playing music since about 1990 but recently had been not been doing much sight reading. Like any muscle or skill; when it goes unused; that skill is lost or at the very least weakened . This book is an interesting way to look at notes on a page and even more so how to think about those notes to translate to what the rhythm is and how to think through that rhythm. The inevitable goal is to be able to sight read better with less breaks(or none) and I feel this book definitely helps. In some ways it may be a retraining of the brain but in others its just a good new way to approach how you break down a piece music while reading through it. It has definitely helped me and is certainly worth a look for beginners and veterans alike.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Fresh Perspectives on Sight Reading - ReccomendedBy SeanamonI like this book. Im a fan of forward thinking; and; finding new ways to conceptualize music; or any related teaching concepts. This book did a great job; until it came to 16th note explanations. Those take a bit more work. I think; a small downloadable worksheet to correspond to the exercises in this book would be very helpful. It starts from very simple to complex.I will advise you though; that there is a lot of reading; and as visionaries like to do; the author takes us into his own thought processing and reasons behind what he does. Sometimes an idea can be made more concise; but overall; this book is a great one; with some very fresh perspectives on sight reading rhythms. Is it "Instantly"? In all fairness; not at all. But if you work through the progressive exercises and spend time with the subdivision ideas; it certainly can become that way after a while; probably faster than conventional teaching approaches do.
