Architectural history/Colonial history at its bestBy Marie SharonI read this book years ago when I lived in an old colonial (built circa 1680-1720) in Connecticut. Living in the house was beneficial as I could run around the house with a measuring tape and I could climb into the overhead space and crawl around the dirt cellar as I read to determine which brick maker supplied the bricks; what sort of saplings were used for the floor joists and purlins. Everything to do with these old houses was explained and; had I not lived in this house it would still have been immensely informative.I recently bought two copies for friends of mine who are builders and/or interested in these old homes. (The chimney history alone is a book unto itself.) I have had nothing but acclaim from them. If you are interested in old architecture; if you are interested in architectural history; if you are interested in colonial history; you cannot do better than to spend time with this book.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Do not hesitate... buy this book.By Scott D.I am surprised that this title does not get more attention it is an excellent study of the early American house and how it evolved in Connecticut. Variations of all aspects of construction from floor plans; framing styles and detailing; masonry and window construction to interior design and profiles. There is a lot of space devoted to the finer details of the joiners work; entryways; cornice work; paneling and trim work. Built-in cupboards; stairs and mantels are all also well covered. Profiles are given for most of the moulding elements; which is worth the price of the book on its own. This book belongs in your library if you are at all interested in early design and construction of timeless homes.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Very HelpfulBy CustomerI turn to this book to restore our early 18th century home. It has been incredibly helpful to uncover what is original and what has been "improved" in our home.
