Interesting plant study with historical significance...By TolkienFanThis is a modern book; at least in the sense of the manner in which it is bound and the material used in the pages and cover. That; along with the modern typeface; lends an aura of familiarity to the book as you hold it in your hands. Once you open the cover and start to examine the product closely; you get the idea that this book is a little different. As well it might be....After my initial glance through the pages and before I started reading for content; I went to the publication data page and noted a few things. This book is a publication from 2005....but according to the "Bibliographical Note" it is in reality an "unabridged republication" of an original work from 1901. Well; that explains the "feel" of the book then.!! It might have been nice to know that in advance of my purchase; but it in no way detracts from the value of the work. This book was originally pointed toward "Designers; Art Students; and Craftsmen" and this new edition follows the same path according to its title (...for Artists and Craftspeople). And to that end I think it does its job well. This is a collection of plates and accompanying descriptive text designed to help in the artistic study of plant form. It was not designed as a "picture book" nor should anyone assume that it could be used as such. All of the plates (the images..) are strictly line drawings and the accompanying text is entirely physically descriptive. In other words; you would not sit down and read through this book as you would a short story or a novel. It is probably best suited as a reference work or as a supplementary text for an artist; student; or draftsman.I do some hand engraving; and the artform requires at least a passing knowledge of plant form. I have been drawing plant life for years; but am always looking for more and better examples. This book is unique in that it offers a perspective relative to the eyes of artists more than a hundred years ago. After glancing through the plates and noting the common names; I feel like I havent missed much during the intervening time frame. You will be familiar with most of the plants shown in this work. There may be some which will be new to you; but in all cases you will find that the drawings are well-done and useful for study. So; for the inquiring artistic mind; or maybe just because you are interested in plant life; I think this is definitely a book worth having. The text is easy to read and presents enough horticultural background to make the study interesting. The line drawings are clean and well done. Interestingly...each of the plates are scaled. They all have a small inch-scale on the page to give you an actual idea of the real life size of each species; their leaves; flowers; and/or fruit.I can recommend this book without qualification for artists or for the artistically inclined. It is well worth the money spent.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Five StarsBy sandra saittolovely vintage line drawings
