Shes an advanced reader; and this book still gave her a healthy challenge; it would not have been a good choice for her as an independent reading book. The illustrations are highly stylized; which I find an asset (others my find them distracting as theyre unrefined and a bit harsh). The adaptation finds a great middle ground in combining traditional-to-Old English prose with a more contemporary vernacular; offering readers (young and old) an accessible exposure to the foundations of our descriptive; English language styles. My daughter loved the story; as did I. As a follow-up; we rented Steve Martins "Roxanne." This book has turned us on to the publishers other offerings; too: "Pride and Prejudice;" "Tom Sawyer;" Edgar Allen Poe stories; and others. As a teacher; there is great value in introducing these old stories; as theyre often models used by modern story tellers; giving young readers larger reading strategy tools to promote greater comprehension. Oh; and theyre fun to read :)0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Useful for having alongside edition if learning French/English with this text...By A. BoileauUseful. Just got a house in Bergerac have to learn French should know this story (as this play helped to make the town famous!). This edition is useful while going through the French edition/dialogue; as it has a good selection of words fantastic to see how to say something in English various ways in French have the play dialogue translated with various selections of nuance which is clearly shown with the Thesaurus entries...will make going through the rather odd play a lot more of a practical exercise... and more memorable (I type hopefully).0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The original; unbeatable textBy Patrick PerduOf course you will need to read French but if you master the language you should definitely give it a shot. This is my favorite play ever; one of my top ten books and the only play in there.Forget the movies (except maybe the French one with Depardieu); and no it does not end very well; but Edmond Rostand takes you for a ride through love and war and wit and charm and fun and; yes; cooking; all in some of the most brilliant yet funny example of mastery of the alexandrine.I laugh out to tears each time I read it.
