Review
3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. but that the system has regularly destroyed perfectly fine architects and perfectly mediocre architectsBy David ArbogastThis has to be one of the most depressing books I have read in years; You can judge a book by its cover (black) and its title (bleak). The basic thesis is that the vast majority of architects are losers (the authors term). He provides a thorough argument for his thesis beginning with the early nineteenth century through his own personal experiences. The narrative is not chronological; so the reader should be advised that having a working knowledge of British architectural history of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries is essential in following the narrative. The conclusion is not that architecture or architectural styles have failed; but that the system has regularly destroyed perfectly fine architects and perfectly mediocre architects.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Yes this is a bleak book; but calls attention ...By Gilbert GorskiYes this is a bleak book; but calls attention to the "system" that celebrates those architects driven by self promotion who are in the business of creating personally expressive art; and the rest; the "loses"; who have been content to create appropriately quite background (fabric) buildings that never get any attention.
