If you generally like the Real Book series and like some of these songs; this one is a winner. Great song selection here. This one really is what the Real Rock Book could have been. I guess it works better because its just a smaller musical niche. I hope it sells well and they produce a volume 2. This one is just a pleasure to play through. Ive got all of the original Real Books (jazz books) from Hal Leonard and the Real Rock Book as well. This one is the same format. Its a fake book with nice; big; easy-read Real Book font.It has instrumental cues where they otherwise dont overlap with the vocals; and the REAL changes for these tunes. The actual nuanced RB vocal phrasing is notated in a lot more accurate detail (to the original recordings) than youd usually find in books containing these songs. So; if you can read at a high level or already know the tunes; its really helpful to be able to play through tunes you havent seen in a while by just reading through. If youre able to read music at a very high level; youll appreciate the accuracy of many of these arrangements; but please understand that this series of books is basically for pros. If you want something easier or a little more watered-down; get something else. This one is really geared toward musicians who are comfortable reading music at all levels and in any key (original keys of the tunes).0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. One awesome book!By SploorpI just received my copy in the mail and spent a good part of New Years Eve and most of New Years Day playing through old favorites and having a blast.Having spent some time studying jazz in college; I was very familiar with the Real Book and its one page chord melody head arrangements. I expected more of the same with this book and if thats all it was; the song selection alone would have made it worthy of a five star rating. There are hundreds of songs from the earliest Motown and Stax classics to more current selections from people like Beyonce and Prince. But this Real Book is so much more than just head arrangements. There are intros; outros; hooks; runs; fills; interludes and full lyrics. If there is a cool riff from the horn section between lyrics; its more than likely in there. And its not just a few random selections either; but nearly every single song. Granted; most of this stuff is pretty straight forward and easy enough to figure out on your own by ear; but there is something about having it right at your fingertips that is very appealing. If youre a musician with even a little bit of reading ability and you have a passion for classic soul; funk and RB; this book is definitely for you.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
