I knew I was taking a chance when the "LOOK INSIDE" didnt show ANY examples of the monologues. The monologues are short and quite frankly demeaning. I am a middle school Theatre Arts teacher and this book REALLY talks down to the student. Since doesnt give you an example of any monologues; here is a taste of one of the "historical figures"."Tired" - Stand up. Run around the track. Do sit-ups. Well; I am tired. And I hate gym class. I am not moving when or where I dont want to. I feel like all day people are bossing me around and telling me what to do. Clean your room. Do your home work.... (skip to end). I mean no disrespect; but you just gotta understand me. Today Im sitting out. This is supposed to be Rosa Parks. To equate Rosa Parks struggles to working out in gym is really insulting and does not do Rosa Parks any justice or teach the students anything about Civil Rights. This couldve been an incredible book. Great idea but it totally missed the mark. The only reason I gave it a star was for some good ideas for lesson plans. Those ARE in the "Look Inside" portion.Skip it...0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. not what I expectedBy Sarah JI ordered this book to use with my Junior High students for their speech unit. The speeches were extremely short and were not going to be long enough to last the minute suggested in the title. It was also more of a game to figure out who the speaker was.I think it would have worked for auditions; but for speech giving in a class; not the best.
