Descartess notion of subjectivity changed the way characters would be written; performed by actors; and received by audiences. His coordinate system reshaped how theatrical space would be conceived and built. His theory of the passions revolutionized our understanding of the emotional exchange between spectacle and spectators. Yet theater scholars have not seen Descartess transformational impact on theater history. Nor have philosophers looked to this history to understand his reception and impact. After Descartes; playwrights put Cartesian characters on the stage and thematized their rational workings. Actors adapted their performances to account for new models of subjectivity and physiology. Critics theorized the theaters emotional and ethical benefits in Cartesian terms. Architects fostered these benefits by altering their designs. The Mind-Body Stage provides a dazzlingly original picture of one of the most consequential and confusing periods in the histories of modern theater and philosophy. Interdisciplinary and comparatist in scope; it uses methodological techniques from literary study; philosophy; theater history; and performance studies and draws on scores of documents (including letters; libretti; religious jeremiads; aesthetic treatises; and architectural plans) from several countries.

Despite its origins in this country and despite being about the same age as hip-hop; the many variants of electronic music have never really broken through to the mainstream; until recently. Now every major festival seems to have an EDM element to it even if its not entirely dedicated to the sound. Matos takes us from the roots of the sound and the parties up to some of the most recent festivals; introducing us along the way to many of the movers; shakers and originators that got us to this point. Maybe you were at one of the parties documented; or one similar; youll be transported back to the dancefloor. Youll hear the beat of the songs mentioned; and feel that familiar shiver up your spine remembering the first time a track really touched you. Maybe youve never been to a rave; festival or nightclub where this music lives; but heard about this counter culture; this will give a glimpse of what it was like.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. and love; loveBy GeorgieThis is a magnificent chronicle of music history that expounds upon the enigmatic world of underground music and its evolution in an interesting; respectful and thought-provoking manner. I am an old-head raver (and always one of the oldest in the crowd jumping up and down) who started as a house-music freak; and love; love; love all of the sub-genres. I am so appreciative to the pioneers and this book pays homage and give props. A must read for all EDM fans! If you dont know where it started; youll fall for anything!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. My book arrived perfect. Clean coverBy K. RyborzMy book arrived perfect.
