MAYAs someone who is both interested in theatre history and especially Victorian and Edwardian theatre; I was intrigued by this book. It turns out to be comprehensive; but not as much as it could be; and more than one section left me feeling like it was incomplete; to my dismay. Not that anything was bad; or poorly written--on the contrary; the anthology of views (which is what it is) was quite good; just not as fully informative as it could have been. I wanted more in a Cambridge Companion. Recommended; but with a caveat that I infer Theatre History; of which this is an example; is an evolving discipline. The editor did do a splendid job in collating the material.
