Informative and sympathetic look at Rick Nelsons lifeBy pop culture iconThis book is; by my count; the third biography to have been written about Rick Nelson. Each of them has something to offer; and I have gained from each. Sheree Homers biography; however; is the best of the three. Her focus is where it should be: On the music. And she is quite knowledgeable about the music and the musical environment in which Nelson grew up and; in turn; influenced. Homer had extensive interviews with musicians who worked with Nelson or were close to him; and they seem to have trusted her. There are several oddities about Nelsons musical career. One of these is how underrated he is by much of the general public (particularly many who perceive themselves as experts) in spite of a long and commercially successful career. He is dismissed by many as a 1950s version of Bobby Sherman or David Cassidy. Nothing could be further from the truth. The reality is that the musicians themselves know this. Nelson is held in high regard by the likes of John Fogerty (who used to warm up in the studio by playing "Stood Up"); Paul McCartney (who wanted to produce an album of Nelson recording at the original Sun Records Studio in Memphis); and many others. The great respect that Nelsons peers had for him shows through in Homers book; as does his influence on other musicians; particularly in the 1970s. Homer is a highly regarded musical journalist. Like many other journalists she could be regarded as a scholar of sorts. She certainly comes across as a scholar of American roots rock. But dont let the word scholar scare you. This is a well-written; easily accessible book. Any fan of Rick Nelson or of rockabilly or of country-rock will find many hours of pleasure in this book and will find many references that will take him in new directions.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. All about Ricks love for musicBy Glenn ScovilAs a 23 year old; whom sadly never lived in an era of listening to a "New Rick Nelson LP"; after reading this book; I cant help but applaud Sheree Homers efforts in showing the man Rick Nelson was behind his music; and life in general. Throughout the book; Sheree shows how sincere Rick was about his music; and especially how much he loved his fans; that "...they made him a direct part of their lives" and that "...he could never let them down." While reading the book; it verified my love for Rick as a person and especially his music. This book definitely helps explain to people who love Ricks music; just exactly why they do. He was so heartfelt in putting the best he possibly could on vinyl- thats why he never recorded a song he did not like. He never wanted to cheat his listeners- thats why he felt so heart broken after Madison Square Garden in 1971.I am glad that Sheree went out of her way to shine the light on not the negatives; or only the highlights of his career; but genuinely showed how much of the man he was that made the music as great as it was; and how much of a travesty that most of his Stone Canyon Band material was not correctly recognized as ground-breaking; top of the charts stuff. Afterall; we are all human; no one is perfect; but Rick is correctly portrayed in this wonderful biography. He would be proud; a must read.-Ben Scovil0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. In depth look into Rick Nelson s music careerBy Frank BerardiThis book is extremely well written and has now given me all Ive ever wanted to know about Rick Nelson s music career; you couldnt ask for any more. I was really interested on how in depth this book went into Rick`s tragic death and how a followup chapter has been created on Rick`s legacy through his children. My reason for a three star rating is I am a massive Ozzie and Harriet fan and there was minimal mention of his time on the show. It would have been fantastic to get some inside knowledge on "Ricky" Nelson; as well as more insight of the rest of the family. The most I have been able to find on The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet is a history channel documentary made in 1996 and reading Ozzie Nelson`s autobiography. As emphasized above; if you have a keen interest in Rick Nelson`s music; this book is a must read.
