Japanese Love Hotels: A Cultural History (Routledge Contemporary Japan Series)

DOC Japanese Love Hotels: A Cultural History (Routledge Contemporary Japan Series) by Sarah Chaplin in Arts-Photography

Description

Drawing on theories of place; consumption and identity; Sarah Chaplin details the evolution of the love hotel in urban Japan since the 1950s. Love hotels emerged in the late 1950s following a ban of licensed prostitution; then were extremely popular in the 1970s; were then legislated against in the 1980s and are now perceived as ‘leisure’; ‘fashion’ or ‘boutique’ hotels. Representing a timely opportunity to capture and evaluate the dying manifestations of an important era in Japanese social and cultural history; this book provides a critical account of the love hotel as a unique typology. It considers its spatial; aesthetic; semiotic; and locational denotations and connotations; which results in a richly nuanced cultural reading. The love hotel is presented as a key indicator of social and cultural change in post-war Japan; and as such this book will be of interest to a wide and international readership including students of Japanese culture; society and architecture.

Review
4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. an unbelievable bargainBy David A. CaufieldFor four dollars; I cant think of a better bargain in all of classical sheet music. The quality of the folio is outstanding - nicely printed pages with a sewn binding! As a professional pianist; I usually only buy urtext editions; but the Henle editions (the only urtext I could find) are broken up by opus number; meaning Id have to buy ten books instead of one that costs four dollars (I want to emphasize that point). Plus since these are the originals as published by Edition Peters when Grieg was alive; they are; in a sense; urtext. If you have any interest in Griegs Lyric Pieces (and every pianist should; really); buy this right now. Its all there. FOR FOUR DOLLARS! Did I mention this is an outstanding deal? Im listening to March of the Trolls right now; and Im so happy I now have the sheet music for it; plus Arietta; Butterfly; and all the other wonderful piano music Grieg wrote for this series. Im adding it up...I would have spent over $100 to get all the Henle editions. Dont delay. I have a feeling it wont be this cheap forever.15 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Good edition. Great music.By Joshua S. InfiestoIm a stickler for good editions; so I normally dont buy Dover. This edition however; is clearly printed; has large pages and is generally easy to read. If youre a fan of Grieg; and I am; you cant do without this set. Also; its a steal. As far as its "scholarliness" is concerned; I own several other editions and havent noticed any important differences between the scores.7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Great book of pleasing music!By Max O.This Dover edition is a great buy at the list price already; but s price is just ludicrously cheap! The binding has held together perfectly so far; and does for the most part stay flat. In the books extremities; however; it does need a little bit of help to stay open and lay flat when you first buy it. The printing is clear; dark; and easy to read; as well as not too densely packed on the page. Reprinted from older C.F. Peters editions; the engravings etc. seem accurate and reputable.Griegs Lyric Pieces are pleasant; varied; and not very difficult to learn. If you seek a book of piano music from which you can pick pieces at random to read for pleasure; this is it!As noted on the back cover; Griegs harmonies here are interesting and late-Romantic; sometimes anticipating the music of Debussy and Ravel; et al. The melodies are charming and often memorable as well. Each piece functions on its own and as a member of its specific opus numbered set. Also; the entire cycle of pieces works as a whole. I like how the last piece is a reflection on and a re-imagining of the first.Overall; theres just about something for everyone interested in piano music in this volume.Note: coming back to my review; I kind of feel bad about using the term "salon music" in the original title! I feel that Grieg put a lot of genuine emotion into these utterly delightful mood pieces; and the more I play them the more I get out of them. Im still loving it months after purchase; the book is still in nearly perfect condition; and I plan to play from it for the rest of my life. You can enjoy it too; its worth the modest investment.
