DOC Jewish Art in America: An Introduction by Matthew Baigell in Arts-Photography

Description

[Williamss] plays have brought the experience of black urban youth onto the stage ObserverSucker Punch: As usual with Williams; the dialogue is crisp and bespoke: motives are mixed; nobody is a hero; nothing is just black and white. The TimesJoe Guy: Williamss dialogue ricochets around the stage like gunfire . . . energetic; exciting and entertaining. StageCategory B: Category B is a harrowing play; but one shot through with both dark humour and tentative flickers of hope. Daily TelegraphBaby Girl: The shocking thing about Roy Williamss Baby Girl is that it argues that there is a cyclical pattern to teenage pregnancy . . . Williams paints a rivetingly plausible picture of a world in which mothers and daughters are sexual rivals; virgin is the ultimate peer insult and the school gates are a fertile hunting ground for male predators. GuardianTheres Only One Wayne Matthews: Williamss writing is punchy . . . Waynes gradual understanding of the realities of the world make this a touching coming-of-age drama. Guardian

Great reference and historyBy LichenThe information about each tune is invaluable for a serious fiddler - from history and legend to alternate tunings. Where cross-tuning is shown; the author gives song notation; then also a second version "the way it should sound" - so that the cross-tunings ultimately make total sense. The book lists many stand-bys from the Appalachians as well as a few Ive never heard of. A large collection. The info in the intro chapters is never not interesting and often informative - I found it interesting though how the author; as a classically-trained violinist rather humorously looks down her nose; ultimately; at these mountain fiddlers - revealing as much about her and the world she came from; as it does about the Appalachian fiddlers and their world... At any rate; by spending many hours listening to them and transcribing these songs; she has left us all an enormous gift. This book is a must for anyone interested in mountain fiddling history and/or the serious fiddler.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
