Five StarsBy Jesse H.This book is wonderful; especially if you have an interest in the deep details of East German cinema.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Start exploring East German cinemaBy Jim M.If you are new to the films of East Germany; I can think of no better place to start exploring the subject than with this book. The author examines some of the most famous East German films; with lots of keen observations and fun facts along the way. All of the films he discusses are readily available with English subtitles. The book is constructed more or less chronologically; starting with The Murderers are Among Usmdash;the first film from DEFA (East Germanys state-run film company); which was made before East Germany was even officially a stat; and ending with The Latest from the Da-Da-eRmdash;a darkly comedic film that wasnt released until after the Wall fell. While most books on the subject of East German films are written for academic purposes and can be dry at time; this one is written for everyone and is fun.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Excellent resourceBy Melissa WeintraubThis monograph is an excellent introductory volume and an ongoing resource for students; teachers; and others interested in East German film. Heiduschke provides a history of East Germany after WWII which allows the movies to fit into a context; descriptions of more recent history; too; enable readers to understand the context of East German films resurgence.Readers are also provided with descriptions and analyses of a number of movies; each of which represents a different genre (though they were likely not called that at the time); tying each back into the events described earlier in the book. Viewers seeing the films for the first time can gain a greater understanding; viewers who have seen them before may be exposed to a new point of view.Heiduschke is passionate about East German Cinema; and it shows in his writing. Its clear he hope to share this passion with readers.
