Description

How did our ancestors die? Whereas in our own day the subject of death is usually avoided; in pre-Industrial England the rituals and processes of death were present and immediate. People not only surrounded themselves with memento mori; they also sought to keep alive memories of those who had gone before. This continual confrontation with death was enhanced by a rich culture of visual artefacts. In The Art of Death; Nigel Llewellyn explores the meanings behind an astonishing range of these artefacts; and describes the attitudes and practices which lay behind their production and use.Illustrated and explained in this book are an array of little-known objects and images such as deaths head spoons; jewels and swords; mourning-rings and fans; wax effigies; church monuments; Dance of Death prints; funeral invitations and ephemera; as well as works by well-known artists; including Holbein; Hogarth and Blake.

Making Great Music with the "Bare Necessities"By Lo Lo BrassThis book is not only educational for keyboard players; it is a great tool for all types of musicians!I am a Tuba; Trombone; and hacker type piano player; and play Tuba and Trombone professionaly in Traditional Jazz Bands; as well as recrerationally in Community Bands; and a local University Symphony Orchestra. I use the book and its charts to read Chord Spellings; create different types of Bass Lines for my Tuba; use the tables to show all the current and past symbols used for jazz chords; and as a quick resource for major and minor chord spellings. I use the book in conjunction with Ann Collins other book "How to Read a Fake Book" to learn how to create accompaniment for songs given in "Fake Book" style with the melody in treble clef; and the guitar chord symbols above the notes where the changes take place. This is how our Dixieland and Trad Jazz music is usually given to us; if there is music at all!The book was less than 10 bucks; and if you follow it for fake book style piano playing; and dilligently do the exercises; you will be amazed how many songs you can learn in a short amout of time. It covers playing in all keys major and minor; all types of chords; and hand positioning for the chords. Two thumbs up!
